@cuddlefaery yeah, I did think about that when I was writing it! But I reckon it might work anyway - getting rid of the earworm doesn't depend on getting the right answer, or any answer.
I tutor teenagers in maths. Most of them have been diagnosed with some combination of mild to moderate dyscalculia, dyslexia, ADHD, ASD, dyspraxia, oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety, depression, etc. And others who would qualify for a diagnosis, or are given one after I recommend an assessment. Now I haven't done scientific testing on this, and it's just my own experience, but I never yet met a kid yet who couldn't get earworms.
Did I get ya? Did I?!
But seriously, folks .... the thing that my students really suffer from is bad teachers. Bad teachers do terrible harm to children and the heart of my job is fixing it. Almost everybody who "can't do maths" would be able to do maths just fine were it not for the psychological damage inflicted on them by bad teachers.
There are people who truly can't do maths, or can't do part of maths (I've taught one) but that's a different thing and it's very rare.

@CuddleDuncan I did all the way up through intro calculus in grade school, didn't get diagnosed until last year 😅 my hometown is EXTREMELY competitive (understatement to say the least), and I was considered an underperforming slacker for having less than a 4.0 grade average and only taking 2 college level courses 🙄🤦🏻♀️ I absolutely can do math, but memorizing anything with numbers (like formulas) or having to mental math is extremely difficult. I had to have tutors and literally just stressed and grit my teeth through it because failure wasn't an option. When I got to college and knew I wouldn't need more advanced math I tested out....dance teachers only need to count "5, 6, 7, 8!" 😂😂😂
As a plus side though, having to learn the absolute hardest way possible with so little accomodations, I learned pretty much all the "cheats" and tricks so now when I sub or tutor math, it makes it incredibly useful. I still screw up repeating numbers back to people or making change on the daily, so I always triple count and will write stuff out long form if no calculator is available rather than rely on my shoddy brain.
Speaking of earworms and math struggles....
This is literally how I memorized my multiplication tables and to this day when I need to multiply things in my head, I hum these songs back to myself.... More than 25 years later. If you have a kid who struggles with math, music is an incredible teaching tool.

@cuddleduncan . . . "maths" is one of those curious differences in English that depends on which side of the Atlantic you're on. Throughout my life, it's always been either "math" or "mathematics". So when I hear (or read) someone referring to "maths", it causes my mental train to derail ever so briefly.
Guess derailing the mental train is another good way to shut down an earworm.
