Hip Hop 50th Anniversary

Today is the 50th anniversary of hip hop music. The most influential music invented by people mainstream society has overlooked for centuries.
Today is the anniversary and I just want you to post a video or some words that introduced you to it.
Show some love to hip hop.

This was played in my household so much I learned how to walk with rhythm and swag. My first introduction to hip hop.

    I won't post a video cause...reasons lol
    But when I first heard Cypress Hill I was interested in it. My family didn't really approve.
    Then, and I know this sounds a bit standard for a white guy, when I heard Eminem. Only because he taught me I don't have to look like others as long as you have skill you're respected. Then I dove into everything old and new. I love Rakim, Big L, Pac and BIG of course.
    Joe Budden taught me its ok to speak about my depression so he was big in my life.

    My first tape was De La Soul 3 Feet High and Rising. I've been in love with the culture ever since.

    I started dabbling in turntablism when I was 17. I'm 42 now and I still love it. Shoutout to all the DJs. DJs are why we have hip hop in the first place. Today marks the day that Kool Herc threw that first party.

    Beastie Boys- Licensed to Ill was on heavy rotation in my household growing up! 🥰

    And it stays in heavy rotation on my turntable to this day!

    Just come classic breaks. For those that don't know, hip hop started with music like this. DJs would find the "break" in a song, then backspin that so that the danceable part gets looped for the b-boys.

    The Djs held it down simce the early 70's, then the Bboy era which brings us to today. The rhythm is universal and soulful. Thats what this us really all about.

    @GrayKunz serato is as serato does but it’s almost a necessary evil. Respect to all the DJs and turntablists. My collection is 99% albums so I can sit back and listen to them as intended.

    @ScroogeMcducky It started with the DJ, moved to the dance floor, reverberated through fashion and graffiti, and polished off with the MC. It’s more than a rhythm, it’s a culture. Much respect to all the heads ❤️

    I don’t remember which artist introduced me to hip hop for the first time but I do recall these 4 songs as the ones I had on the most growing up.

    Op, idk what you mean by hip hop being overlooked. It's about as mainstream as it gets right now. It's permeated nearly every facet of our society.

    Digital Underground was my favorite growing up. Underwater Rhymes was so imaginative and fun. I still do “Freaks of the Industry” at karaoke, I do Shock and my friend does Money. 😆 Much more to say but that group’s pretty nostalgic.

    old school hip hop was good back in the day (and i'm in my 50's) it was all about having fun, getting girls, dancing, who is a better rhymer, roller skating, partying, etc...then it took a dark turn. anything past 1990 just, well, is horrible. the worst music next to bachata, lol. i'd rather listen to yodeling, or cats with their tails being chewed off. seriously, modern rap ad hip hop is disgusting, shameful and a slight to real music.

    but from the day, my faves were LL cool Jay and old school beasties.

    @boca444 get your head out from under ur 50+ year old rock and educate yourself. Not only is this an appreciation post, but there’s lots of really good quality hip hop that came out post 90’s-today. Nobody cares about your chauvanist opinion 🙄

    Been listening since as far back as I could remember, but I fell in love with it around 03 (Cassidy and his style at that time) Jadakiss, Lloyd Banks ect … bars and wordplay was next level, nobody came close and this is the style of rap I lean towards - PunchLines, WordPlay, ect and when it came to the south, Jeezy - Ross , TI at the time, so I like a variety as well , Drake , Meek, Sean, old Kanye , dipset , wayyyy too many to list … I love a lot of it

    The first Cassette I ever bought was around the 3rd grade and it was this 😂
