Friends, where were you on 9/11?

22 years ago today I was in Palm Desert, California at KESQ Newschannel 3/KDFX Fox 11/KUNA Telemundo 15. I had just started my second day after my job promotion to program director. I came in to work about 530am because I knew I was going to have a busy day settling in to my new job responsibilities in addition to my existing ones as traffic manager. I was downstairs in our master control area organizing tapes when the ABC "Net Alert" started beeping and sent an urgent message "SPECIAL REPORT AIRING NOW" and simultaneously the FOX "Fox Box" voice alert system squawked on and an intense voice from The FOX Network Operations Center came on and said "ATTENTION ALL STATIONS - STAND BY FOR A LEVEL 1 SPECIAL REPORT". Both of our stations switched to their respective networks (and I signed on our Telemundo Station which wasn't supposed to go on until 6am) and stayed with continuous network news coverage. Saw the plane hit the second tower on dozens of monitors simultaneously. I was at the station until about 8pm that night. Maintained my composure until I was driving home from work. A huge crane was placed on the side of a major road (Fred Waring Dr.) and someone had hung from 100 feet up the biggest American Flag I had ever seen - with two huge spotlights lighting it up in the nighttime desert sky. I lost it right then and there. I was lucky if I got 2 hours sleep that night.

    I was 15, in 10 grade, JROTC class, in Georgia and able to watch the news. Never Forget 9/11!

    I was working for a newspaper at the time and worked night hours. Was home in the morning and heard the news about a plane hitting the Trade Center. At first, everyone thought it was an accident. Saw the second plane hit on live TV. That's when it became obvious it wasn't an accident.
    Went into work that night and the world was a different place.

    I was teaching math to a group of ninth graders. Once we were informed something was going on we turned on the TV to watch.

    At work. I was in a brainstorm when we got told the second tower had been hit, and the guy running it said, "Well, we have to finish this." When we finally got out of the meeting, there was a phone message from the CEO telling us all to go home and be with our families.

    Still living in Brazil, I travelled to Sao Paulo to take the GRE test for my PhD application at the only USA-credited English school. I spent a good part of the day there, then hoped in a couple of buses to go back home. My mother picked me up at the bus station, already in the evening, and asked "Did you see what happened, with the towers?". I had no idea till then, and most curiously I was in American soil, taking my test and didn't hear anything.

    I was in my 6th grade English class. A few of my classmates had parents who worked in and around WTC, so a few were pulled out of class shortly after we got the news. An incredibly uncomfortable silence overtook the classroom for a couple of minutes, and then our teacher did the best she could to reassure us.
