@INurturePeace I completely agree with everything you said, and from my humble perspective, it's still incorrect to use the word suffering to describe someone's characteristics. To frame it like that is to say I'm also suffering by being loyal, generous, kind, thoughtful - all qualities I possess and people have used to take advantage of me which has caused me great suffering. Being loyal, generous, kind and thoughtful on their own do not cause suffering - it's having to do those things to stay safe, and the LACK of said safety that has caused the suffering, not the traits on their own. Hope that clarification makes sense.
Yes, fawning is brought about by trauma. Fawning is part of the nervous system being unregulated - fight/flight/freeze/fawn. Fawning does not describe someone’s characteristics. Fawning is a trauma response. Fawning is not similar to loyalty or generosity although people who fawn can be loyal and be generous. Fawning is not a personality trait. It is a trauma response.
Exactly. What @INurturePeace said.
@INurturePeace I respect your opinion that your trauma response isn't part of your personality/behavior.
It's awesome to be able to discuss something that is rarely talked about/understood, isn't it? I've been so dismayed that much of the information out there about amygdala hijacking only focuses on the fight/flight parts of the way we've learned how to react to unsafe situations. A few times, resources discuss the freeze response, but hardly ever anything about fawning/people pleasing. I'm so grateful for these forum topics where we can all listen to each other with open minded curiosity about each other's experiences.
