Your “favorite” dystopia

We discuss a lot of books, movies, songs and culture on these forums. One genre of movies particularly popular a few years ago was the Dystopian Future movies which includes notable franchises such as the Terminator / Sarah Connor movies and TV series, The Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.

If you had to pick a dystopia to live in, which one would you pick and why?

    It's sort of sad that there aren't many optimistic dystopian views presented in literature lol.

    Let's go with Clockwork Orange. At least the music is good.

    @stormydaycuddle - I am not familiar with that one.

    @jplemmon - I have seen that movie and it is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen. It is a classic though because it really begs the question about who are the real monsters?

    The Giver, but it's technically not a dystopian future just an alternate reality to our own.

    @Concordiaesque - I have not heard of that one either. I am starting to realize there is a pretty broad definition of “dystopian” 😂

    In a sense, one of my favorite TV shows ever (Humans) could be considered dystopian to some (robots nearly indistinguishable from humans become sentient and “walk off the job” creating societal upheaval). I would not call that one as dark as Mad Max or 1984 but I would have to call it a “dystopia light” future.

    @Concordiaesque a Newbery Medal winner the way to an editor’s heart. 😍😍😍 and it is classified as young adult dystopian so it counts.

    @jplemmon technically, it would be a utopian novel/movie which would be hard to pull off plot wise. Conflict/character drives story.

    Like my story about the clowns. Wouldn’t be as good if she wasn’t in the box.

    @JohnR1972 Yeah! I think a couple zombie movies are dystopian too like Train to Busan or 28 days later. The state of the world and technology pushing the balance of society and the Earth over the edge. Throw in the Terminator series too. I love a good Machine Take Over (Minority Report, iRobot).

    Halloween is around the corner and I'm sure more horror flicks will pop up.

    @stormydaycuddle as an avid reader, I once set a goal for myself to read every newberry/caldecott winners. I don't remember where I was with the list, but I am pretty sure I read most every one (not current, just until whatever year it was I decided to undertake that goal).

    @CharlesInWI nah, dystopian is post-apocalyptic totalitarianism. We are currently apocalyptic. 3/4s of us have to die first.

    I agree. I love Greek and Roman mythology. One of my favorite stories is about the Minotaur who was so ferocious it could only be contained in a labyrinth that it could not find its way out of. I sometimes feel like people inadvertently do that to themselves - construct their own mental prison that is inescapable to themselves (without help) because they cannot “find the way out”

    @JohnR1972 and shame. He was the product of his mother’s affair with a bull because the king angered Poseidon. Ariadne being the true hero of that story. Note to everyone: always bring twine… or breadcrumbs but preferably twine.

    Fun fact: there’s actual evidence of bull related sacrifices in the labyrinth like ruins on Crete.

    Sorry guys you’re stuck with me. Since this topic is directly related to my job and I haven’t talked shop recently (outside of my students) …. I live here now.
