  • This isn't a joke, sorry: I remember when airlines had full meal service in coach class. Of course, there was also a smoking section back then . . . and Hare Krishnas at the airport badgering you for some nonsense or other. Also remember when your ticket and boarding pass could be used by anyone, not just by a named ticket holder.

But anyways, $12 for an inflight snack box is ridiculous.

  • I think the deal with airline food, is its always plane πŸ™„

  • You have to be high to eat airline food.

  • @Jubal - Yes and it used to also cost $1,000 to fly. Now a days, airfare isn't much more expensive than a bus fare but everything else cost extra. I like it better this way since you only have to pay for what you need.

  • You mean what's up with it? 😊

  • @Mike403 Sadly, when you live rural, it still costs nearly a thousand bucks to fly anywhere.

Airports are essentially shopping malls now. Buy what you want if you must eat at one of the restaurants, carry it aboard, and waive the fight attendant on when they ask what you want. Besides, who wants a drink that has the ice that has been exposed to the cabin’s recirculated air from the cabin and bathroom. Think of an airplane’s bathroom when you think of airplane ice in your drink. Mmmm.

That’s why it’s called petri ice.

  • @SunsetSnuggles - Drive to a cheaper airport.

  • @Mike403 yup. Not all airport fees are created equal.

  • @BoomerSpooner @SunsetSnuggles - When my Grandparents in New York was alive, my family would fly to an airport then drive a couple hours to their house. The airport close them was a small airport and couldn't allow that many planes to go there so flying in or out of that airport was crazy expensive.

@Mike403 That’s why the airport fees are in place for low volume airports. It makes up for the lack of revenue to keep the doors open. There is currently a drive by the Feds to pull money from under performing airports and killing them off so eventually people will have no choice but to drive to a large airport.

This sucks because I value flying into a Manchester, NH rather than Boston Logan.

  • We already drive an hour and a half to the cheaper of the "close" airports. When I say rural, I mean rural. 🀣 I ain't drivin' six hours to Utah. No point flying, by that time; may as well drive and have your own car at the other end. Which is what I often do.

    @SunsetSnuggles mmmhmmm! RURAL! πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

  • @OhioMike Heck yeah, you know what's up. 😎 I've literally been stuck behind cattle drives around these here parts...more than once! πŸ˜„πŸƒ But I'll take expensive airline tickets for living among the mountains where wildlife photographers come from all over the world to visit. I'm grateful every time I look out my kitchen window.

  • Airplane food is punishment for the outrageous consumption of flying lol. Especially since if it's domestic you can go from coast to coast or all the way to Hawaii on nothing but soda pop and a couple ounces of corn nuts in cattle class. Unless you want to cough up quadruple for first class. Then you can have some legroom, a slab of meatloaf that's molten on the outside and frozen in the middle, and some spit in your eye πŸ˜‚

@SunsetSnuggles Tired of driving? Hitchhike! :p πŸ‘ πŸš—. It's like Uber, but 10x cheaper and 3x more dangerous! :)

  • @Minestrone101 🀭 Dangerous for them!

  • Oh man @SunsetSnuggles I’m so grateful for my kitchen windows too 😊

  • @OhioMike Your view is always stunning! I love how green it is. Our leaves are starting to turn! This past weekend up higher in the mountains, the groves were already in full color. πŸ’›πŸπŸ§‘

  • They had steak Diane and potatoes with asparagus in first class last time when I was with my mom but I skipped it. I don’t really like eating in front of people. Im sure it wasn’t horrible though.

And I actually remember meals in coach when I was really little. They were weird though from what I remember.

I usually get snacks like fruit and cheese trays, jerky, or chocolate covered almonds. $4 to $8 for those.

Ambitious sounding first class meals don’t taste too good iirc from the main domestic airlines, but it’s probably hard to go wrong with more basic stuff like pasta if they offer that.

I’ve heard some international airlines offer decent in plane meals but I wouldn’t know.

Eating before the flight at your gate is a better option but it’s still going to be overpriced and usually lower quality compared to what you can get outside the airport. There have a been a few times where I was pleasantly surprised by airport food, though.

  • I've never paid for anything consumable on an airplane. I always eat before going to the airport, and bring protein bars, nuts, and some Mentos in case my blood sugar unexpectedly drops.

  • Several years ago I flew to Eastern Europe aboard Singapore Airlines. The food was tailored to the cultural cuisine of the destination and was excellent. Served on a little tray, with metal utensils, tiny jars of jam/preserve....it reminded me very much of the way some domestic US airlines used to be when I was a kid.

Not to mention, back then, on occasion, while in flight, older children would be taken to the cockpit to meet the Captain. But thanks to a bunch of assholes with box cutters, children these days are missing out on that wonderful, inspiring experience.
