Question on vacation preferences

I grew up going to the beach each summer, for a week or two for vacation. A friend was interested in going to NY again, I haven’t been, but would be okay going, but I also wanted to involve going to the beach nearby. On going to the city, I will, although my interest level is moderate, and I wouldn’t plan that just for myself. The beach though, I definitely would, and do.

Even more local cities, such as Chattanooga and Nashville, I will go for certain outings, but I don’t enjoy all the traffic and the extra costs of parking and such.

So the question is, do you like to travel where you grew up traveling, or different places from what you grew up with?

    Grew up going to the same place with family for probably 20 years. Still enjoy the area and go back from time to time even though most of the family has passed.

    I like the adventure of visiting and seeing new places, but also like the comfort of finding a particular spot I enjoy and revisit often just to relax.

    Military brat here so they sent us all over kingdom come and was fortunate to see more than many see in a lifetime. Never go anywhere twice as an adult for the most part but took my kids to all the places I went as a child which is just about everywhere in the US. But I also went places as an adult I didn’t see as a child. Close to seeing all the National Parks—a bucket list goal. But the one place I do return to quite often is New Orleans as my daughter and I love that city warts and all.

    When I was growing up in Northern Indiana, we didn’t go on vacation very often and when we did it was usually just to central Kentucky to see my mother’s family or on very rare occasion to FL but I was young enough I can’t even tell you what city we went to (I just remember hot, coarse brown sand).

    Today when I go on vacation, my favorite spot is Marco Isalnd, FL (with cooler, fine white sand). The rest of my vacations are usually long weekends somewhere in the Midwest or Georgia. I travel to other locations (CO, CA, OR, TX) but those trips are usually work related. When I can, I try to build in a little down time to enjoy the area while I am there.

    As a child I enjoyed all the places we visited around the UK although I harboured a dream to travel abroad. As an adult I realised that dream and I've now had the good fortune to travel the world. I've been to every continent except Antarctica and travelling for its own sake I recommend almost as highly as oxygen.

    Nowadays, I am a counter-example to the dichotomy presented by the OP. In the last few years my holiday has been to the place I was brought up, a place I love. But I itch to get back around the world and, as the circle of life revolves, I hope I will.

    NYC is, along with London, one of the world's two greatest cities. Globally, it is arguably the place most people in the world want to visit or live. The possibility of visiting it is one of life's great priviledges and should not be dismissed lightly. There are literally billions of people who would like to go, but will never get the chance. Visiting London or NYC is winning a subsidiary prize in the life lottery. What you make of your winnings is, of course, up to you.

    I love NYC having visited several times. My sister used to live there, married to a local. It is a place best suited to living and doing, not merely seeing or being. Whatever you do, get out onto the water: it is that harbour that made New York what it is, and perhaps even the US. It's also worth going up something high, so you can get a view of the place.

    It is true that it could hardly be described as "cheap" and the traffic can be ... unimaginable. But to think it is a larger version of your local city would be to make a mistake: it is a different animal altogether.
