Root canals are so much fun(not)

I had a consultation with a root canal specialist due to an infection that's spreading. I need three root canals. Insurance covers quite a bit, but it's still going to be over $5,000 out of pocket(down from $13,000)

I'm sitting in the waiting room right now. He's going to do all three root canals and crowns today.

  • Oooooof. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry...for your wallet, and your mouth. I'd bring you ice cream and pudding if I were in town.

  • Ouch, hope for a speedy recovery. Tooth pain can be the worst.

  • Whatever the phobia of dentists is, I have that. I hate going to the dentist soooo much.

  • Thatโ€™s rough but taking care of your teeth is very good for your health.

  • I feel for you, had 2 done, for me itโ€™s the sound !!! I asked to be knocked out but they wouldnโ€™t do it. But after it was all done it wasnโ€™t all that bad.
    Hang in there

  • Mr. Bean at the dentist

  • Surely someone on here can give you a root canal for $120/hour.

  • Oh man ! Sorry to hear about this @Mike403

Hey that green gas tank of nitrous oxide on your left can be your best new friend! ๐Ÿ˜Š

    Good luck !๐Ÿ‘

  • I saw the dentist yesterday and he wanted to do one root canal yesterday afternoon. I drove to Chicago instead ๐Ÿ˜‚

They quoted me $8k for all the work they want to do including 2 root canals. So I feel you ๐Ÿ˜ญ
I get my first root canal Thursday

  • PS please tell me it's not as bad as I'm imagining it will be?
    I'm insanely anxious

  • You all should do a hsa/fsa if your employer offers it

  • I really hate to hear that @Mike403 but glad you are not putting it off.

If this doesn't make people want to brush and floss regularly, I don't know what will. I fear having bad teeth and floss at least twice a day. Plus I think it makes your mouth feel better. I also know that genetics plays a part in how much brushing and flossing will help.

@dave31415 Lol, you've still got it.

  • I have one! That's how I'm paying for Thursdays root canal. Unfortunately it only pays out so much every 2 weeks and I've had a lot of other medical issues this year.

  • @Mike403 hope it all goes smoothly and hope recovery is fast and easy. And @hey_nikky , same to you. Iโ€™ve had one done. Not pleasant but couldโ€™ve been worse. Going in relaxed and expecting no problems may help. I do agree about the laughing gas, definitely have them use that.

  • @CuddleHugs01234 thank you! I'll make a mental note of the laughing gas

  • @hey_nikky @Mike403 Fly to Romania you people for inexpensive quality dental work. For big jobs, it is much cheaper even when accounting for the flight and the hotel.

Six straight hours of a drill in my mouth without much time to catch my breath. They were able to knock $1,000 off my bill by doing temporary crowns instead of using the milling machine they have on site... so I'll have to go back in when my permanent crowns come in from the lab.

  • @Mike403 Dang, great job making it through that long ordeal! Glad the bill was reduced, some. ๐Ÿค—

  • @SunsetSnuggles - Yup.. some. I applied and was approved for a CareCredit card and was given 24 months to pay it off (a little over $4,000) without interest.

  • Oof! I had one recently and it was more than enough.

  • @Sooson maybe it's time to get a passport ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • Yikes. That is a lot. I only have one crown. I broke a tooth accidently and didn't bother fixing it and avoided the dentist. Not because I am scared of the dentist but because I knew they would make me get a crown and wasn't ready to pay a lot. Eventually I went in because I needing a check up. They noticed that back tooth broken and obviously said I need a crown asap. They were also shocked I wasn't in pain but with time they learned that when it comes to my teeth I can't feel pain much. I mostly got the crown because they said it was bad and kept bugging me about possibly infections and things so I did it. I think I paid like $1500 or so out of pocket. The place that did it also learned how I had no pain lol. Yeah, it sucks how expensive it all is. I could not imagine how you afforded all that in one visit.

  • @Amortentia - I can't. I got a CareCredit card which is a specialized card that can only be used for medical including dental and has a promotional no interest period. I have 24 months to pay it in full to avoid interest charges.

  • @Mike403 at least you have that but it still is a lot to pay even in 24 months. In the USA it is so much money with healthcare and dental it is just nuts. Before the current war in my birth country of Ukraine, I would travel there not only to visit family but visit doctors/dentist there too. It was super cheap compared to here. Your 13k would probably be $300 or under there. We need it to be more affortable here too.

  • @Amortentia - It was $5,000 after insurance which I was able to bring it down to $4,000 but not having my crowns milled on site.

  • What's all this crown business? I thought the current treatment was just to regrow teeth?

  • @CelestialTouch - If it was that easy, we wouldn't need dentists anymore. Just pull them out and let them regrow.

  • @Mike403 Now were getting somewhere! Haven't been to a dentist for a while since I fired my last one.
