But can someone die from massage therapy?
Yes, absolutely. You can do all sorts of harm with massage therapy, particularly certain modalities like deep tissue work. Plus what @BoomerSpooner said about geriatric patients, pregnant women, etc. is spot on. Also, yes, people can get sued for hurting people while giving them massages. Personally, I have always maintained liability insurance for my practice.
One area I never got into but thought about it, was learning more about massage for infants. I might look into that because that is an area I keep coming back to in my mind and thinking, "That sure sounds nurturing and fun." I might do that within the next year or so because I've gotten to a place in life now where I'm doing all kinds of things I've been putting off like learning how to swim, certain sports goals, and so on. My children were older when I got into massage, but it is looking like (hopefully) I might be a grandmother within the next year or two and I'd love to be able to do massage on my grandbabies beyond the things that one can learn in non-therapist classes. I'd particularly like to learn if there is anything massage-related I could do that would help their budding immune systems, for example. Both my daughters think this would be a great idea too, so that is on my bucket list.
I'm not willing to dig too deeply myself into the licensing debate (though those who do by all means carry on ) other than to say I'm in favor of licensing for massage therapy, but I do think people who aren't in favor do have some good points as well such as the people doing the bureaucratic work often just collect the money, issue a license, and move on.
@BoomerSpooner I agree, @sillysassy seems to me from the short time I've been here to be an extremely nice person. I very much hope to meet her someday.
By some of these standards, there isn't yet enough government intrusion into every nook and cranny of life. We're in obvious need of more bureaucracy and more taxes.

Comparing dog walking to massage therapy because you didn’t hear what you wanted to hear is absurd.
I mean you asked if massage therapy can kill you as some sort of bar for licensing and two people quickly told you yes and how, and then you come up with dog walking and how that could kill you. It demonstrates a lack of any knowledge of the healthcare profession and is very dismissive of massage therapists.

Nope. I understood, and I'm not disagreeing with what you and others posted about massage therapy.
For those having a debate about licensing, it is meant to keep the public safe. There's people pretending to be doctors out there, ie: inserting butt implants filled with motor oil. In massage therapy, I read a case where a patient was having right lower posterior knee pain. The spouse attempted aggressive massage to alleviate the pain, incidently dislodging a clot and the patient died. The popliteal fossa is often associated with blood clots. Just an example.

Licensing may be intended to protect the public... but I've heard of stories like that: con artists going house to house performing some kind of "procedure."
At some point, personal responsibility must carry some legal weight. Someone so gullible, so devoid of common sense, doing no due diligence whatsoever, so as to allow a random door knocker to insert/inject anything into their body...
Well, a license, or a lack thereof, isn't going to prevent idiocy.

@pmvines I've been very narrowly keeping my mouth shut thus far, as a (formerly) multi-state licensed teacher in an industry that often doesn't require any formal education, let alone licensure. I don't have the spoons to get started on THAT mess.
