Blocked Users

When you block a user, what is actually blocked? I was hoping that blocking a user would result in not being able to see their posts or comments in the forum, but it looks like that's not how it works. You know how some folks are super good at posting in such a way that doesn't violate terms of service, yet is always irky and often passive aggressive? What a relief it would be to be able to just nope their BS right out of view.

I guess this is my suggestion for that functionality in the future.

Comments

  • There are certain people who I refuse to engage or read their posts in the forum. That’s about all you can do.

Yes what @Morpheus said. The block feature here isn't for the forums, just email/profile. Sorry you're stuck seeing my rambles. JK JK

Thanks for the info y'all. 🙂

When I first started, I would sometimes block users For various reasons and then I realized it really doesn’t make a difference and it’s not worth it and I don’t like anybody having that sort of influence on me so I actually unblocked everybody that I ever blocked and I feel much better about it and like what @Morpheus said sometimes some users are just not worth engaging with. Constantly going back-and-forth is not healthy

  • I don't particularly like echo chambers. They're boring, repetitive, and stale.

If I absolutely had to choose between only seeing comments I agreed with, or those that I don't, I would choose the latter.

It may seem ironic, but exposure to all perspectives, no matter our repulsive we find them, is critical to maintaining civility in society. Once you shut off the option for all all to express themselves, you open another door that leads to much, much worse things.

You may never agree with someone. Or you may change your mind. But either way, it's the only way to grow.

@TxTom I can disagree with people all day long, I don’t have a problem with that. There are just certain individuals I would just rather not share the same air with.

  • I understand, @Morpheus . To each their own.

For me, personally, there isn't anyone on this site whom I dislike.

Speaking only for myself, even the folks I periodically "clash" with in these forums of whom I have strong disagreements with on certain topics, I don't dislike them personally. I would sit down and enjoy an adult beverage with them.

    But that's just me.

  • @TxTom i really like what you wrote about hearing differing perspectives (paraphrasing).
That is how we grow and learn, become more tolerant of each other and are more able to coexist as a society. There are a lot of things said here that I don’t agree with, but I still learned from it, and every day I try to be less upset by some of the things said LOL
(I believe yours is an evolved way of thinking! 🤔)

I was just discussing this with another user, but I think a lot of times people in the forums misinterpret passion and debate for anger/upset/offense. And because those readers think the author is upset by what they said, they get upset in response and it starts a downward spiral of tit for tat until people decide to disengage.

To quote the mock conversion I gave as example:

    "Blah blah blah."
    "Why are you so angry?"
    "I'm not angry."
"Yes you are, and now I'm angry that you're angry."
"Well now I'm angry that you're saying I'm angry, and that you're angry at me about it." etc. etc.

Back to the original question though, I do wish blocking someone blocked everywhere. While sometimes it is fine just scrolling by and choosing not to engage with certain people, blocking is frequently used for more safety and mental health reasons, in which case constantly seeing the name and words of the person you blocked pop up can cause problems. Similarly, when some people realize that they have been blocked they will go out of their way to antagonize the person who rejected them. It's a recipe for creating stalker situations and harassment online and makes people feel unsafe to engage in the forums because they know the person they blocked can still read their words and follow them that way. It makes the act of blocking as a means of setting hard boundaries completely useless.

  • Thank you, @carrieanne .

    And I agree that...

a lot of times people in the forums misinterpret passion and debate for anger/upset/offense...

    ...or hate. That's unfortunate.

  • And sometimes it is hate.

  • i sometimes feel like i might be blocked and people don't see my comments in the forums. But id much rather see differing opinions than a lot of parroting. So it wouldn't be beneficial to the conversation for a block feature to work like that imo. I just think things said in the forums should not be taken personal unless you know people personally. Even then if it was worth those types of feelings they'd be said directly rather than said out loud for everyone to hear.

That's how i try to handle it anyway.

I've been blocked by people who I have actually met on here in the real world and continued to be friendly with online to find that I am suddenly blocked with no preceding incident or negative interactions between us . Stings at first but you get used to not having them in your social circle and move on. Id rather focus my time and energy on people who love me . Not fair weather friends from the interwebs .

  • Block does not take effect on the forums because it's a separate element of the site. Some things are integrated, blocking isn't one of them though.

  • @MonkeyNeedsAHug
It doesn’t seem to be mentally healthy to allow complete strangers who you likely will never meet in person to have such an impact on your emotions that you feel hate! Or any other extreme emotion that can cause stress (a crush or infatuation) I mean we all know this…

  • “Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated.”

    • Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism, but of practical realism. Far from being the pious injunction of a Utopian dreamer, love is an absolute necessity for the survival of our civilization. To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe. Someone must have sense enough and religion enough to cut off the chain of hate and evil, and this can only be done through love.”

  • I don’t know for sure but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that @MonkeyNeedsAHug didn’t mean that he hates anyone on here. The way I’m reading it, I think he means some peoples comments on the board come from a place of hate. I also don’t think hate is the right word. I think he used the word hate because it was mentioned by another user a comment before his.

  • Similarly, when some people realize that they have been blocked they will go out of their way to antagonize the person who rejected them.

    THIS!^^^😑🙄

@cuddlefaery I have experienced and witnessed this elsewhere on other sites. I even recently joined a site (and quickly deactivated after being there for 3 days😌) witnessed one Dudebro doing the "old leave vile insults on women's pics" AFTER they made the BRILLIANT move of either ignoring Dudebro's messages or blocking him altogether. 😏

The whole message and purpose of said site's existence, I liked very much👍 BUT the moderating/banning of rulebreakers, stalkers and racist moron wrangling needs better improvement...So yeah, I left it before the weekend. 😁😊
