@cuddlebuddy9999 Jordan Peterson, healed himself through carnivore diet. As much as I love meat the idea of eating just that seems like too much. Does that include eggs and cheese?
1) Water is the healthiest beverage. 2) The whole food highest in antioxidants is barberries. 3) Taking calcium supplements can stop your body's ability to absorb calcium.
Oooh! Oooh! Oooh!!!! Thank you, @PeopleLikeUs for making this point!!! PLEASE look up "silica"--- Without it, the calcium we take (or get from our diets) has NO STRUCTURE TO ADHERE TO!!! In my own little box, I believe that the osteoporosis that some older folks suffer comes NOT from a deficiency of calcium, but from a lack of silica!!!
There's an herb, Equisetum Arvensis, that can be taken as a tea, that provides the body with LOADS of silica!!! It's also known as "Horsetail" and you'll do your future self, and bones/teeth, a favor by researching this for yourself!!!
Please forgive the double post, but I just caught what @PeopleLikeUs wrote in his second post!!!! Are you talking about Uva Ursi???? If so, I knew about it's ability to WIPE OUT URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS, but you're telling me that it's like a SUPER antioxidant???? Really??? Now, you KNOW you just sent me BACK DOWN THE HERBAL RESEARCH RABBIT HOLE!!!
Thank you!
@Fematheist I don't know much about silica. You've got me thinking.
When your stomach detects excess calcium (most supplements are in high amounts) it shuts off calcium absortion to protect your body.
Barberries are berberis vulgaris.
May I say this is the best post ever!!
I'm gonna go out and get my horsetail tea. I do take diatomaceous earth off and on for getting rid of any bad bacteria, it has silica in it, but I would love to drink it as a tea also.
I rarely drink just water. Most of my water has a teabag in it of some sort.
Most fad diets only work for so long and many people will gain the weight right back.
You can be healthy on virtually any diet, it mostly comes down to portion sizes and balance.
Most causes of premature death are related to diet and can be prevented by healthier eating habits.
Only have one thats near and dear to me right now. Lead exposure. The Veritasium channel on youtube has an incredible analysis of the hazards of lead exposure. Got me re-evaluating how I handle things like fishing tackle (lots of lead sinkers, lead head jigs, etc there).
The big takeaway that I got from the episode is that all the lead reduction measures that we take in the US aren't going to reduce airborne lead levels until we get countries like China, Venezuela, India, and so on to follow the same measures.
Another interesting point is that long term lead exposure in children may be a causal factor in crime rates when they become adults.
@KozyKim Tea is actually improves on water. And people have specific dietary goals that may include various juice combinations etc. So water being the healthiest beverage is based on across the board studies. Barberries being the highestest in antioxidants is also a relative. The science behind antioxidants is still in its infancy. So health facts are always in relation to something else or specific needs, or in these cases, what antioxidants?
Scribbling furiously..."Berberis vulgaris".... Got it! Thank you, @PeopleLikeUs !!! Please do research to function of silica in the formation of the crystalline structure into which calcium is most efficiently deposited!! Then, get back with me on your findings?
@KozyKim ~ My water usually has a teabag in it, too!! lol We, as women, are often plagued by osteoporosis as we mature (read: lose our estrogen, as we complete menopause!), so we're especially at risk for WRONGLY taking calcium supplements, thinking that will help. It just gives us gall stones and bacterial biofilm igloos in our arteries--because the calcium is deposited in the wrong places!!! lol I'd love to hear what you find!!!
@quincyq03 ~ Thank you for the info share!! Your third point made me literally nod in agreement!!! I'm glad you shared these insights!
@Jubal ~ I'm still sending you adoration "vweems" from another post you made! Back to the task at hand: lead exposure.. Having worked in the construction/renovation industry for more years than I care to admit, I've experience, first hand, the nasty effects of lead exposure. However, I've also discovered, through research, that the simple herb Cilantro (organic, non-irradiated) causes the body to DUMP heavy metals... This, in combination with some sort of fiber, like psyllium, allows the body to clear its cells... Just wanted to share a thought. It has made a big difference for me!
@Fematheist After doing a couple of Googles, it's pretty clear all of the foods that are highest in silica I eat in abundance, except for bananas which brings up another nutrition fact. When a banana is blended into a smoothie, the half-life of all the antioxidants in that smoothie is 10 minutes. Neither calcium nor silica are issues with me. Are they with you?
@Fematheist I'll happily take any tips on ways to reduce lead accumulation in the body. Over the years, I'm sure I've had far too much
And I appreciate the happy thoughts
@PeopleLikeUs ~ Thanks for sharing that about the rather brief half-life of the antioxidants in bananas after they've been smushed up in a smoothie!!! So much for "saving the rest for later," right? Thankfully, neither calcium nor silica are issues for me.. I've held up pretty well! Good to know that you're eating strategically, though. Gotta fuel the machine!!
@Jubal~ Although I think cilantro tastes like SOAP (YUCK), it's helped me with decreasing my body burden of both lead AND mercury. I'd like to keep some part of my mind as I enter my golden years! If you find anything else, please share!
@KozyKim ~ This IS an awesome thread! So informative!!!
@Fematheist Bananas having a half-life doesn't surprise me, since they're radioactive. It's important to limit your banana intake. If you eat 10 million bananas, you will die of radiation poisoning.
Whoa... @Unscented Lemon!! For real??? Although I'm not much for bananas (I'm more of a bok choy gal! lol), it's a real bummer to read that!! Especially when I think of how many well-meaning parents feed their children 'nanas, thinking they're doing the right thing!!!
I still drink bourbon so I'm not going to perp like I "live clean," but this one's a doozy! Thanks for the share!
@Fematheist I was being facetious. Bananas are radioactive, yes, but very minimally so. 10 million bananas would be a lot to eat at once. I personally don't think I could manage more than 3 or 4 (bananas, not million bananas). If you think about it, we're slightly radioactive too. Carbon-14 dating is based on the half-life of a radioactive carbon isotope found in organic matter.
I also agree about bok choy. It's two vegetables in one. A celery-like stalk (but less stringy) and a green leafy vegetable.
people who are allergic to latex often have cross-reactive allergies to proteins in bananas, avocados, kiwis, and/or strawberries, to name a few. There's a whole list of potentials, and people may have some, all, or none.
I found out about the banana allergy long before I knew I was latex sensitive - they're a "death fruit" for me and cause anaphylaxis with a single bite. Someone eating one and kissing me on the lips makes my lips swell, which is a fun party trick 😅 I usually carry an epi pen just in case, but thankfully they're easy to avoid... unless your student makes homemade baked chocolate goods that cover up the smell/taste and you stupidly eat one on the way home in traffic. Whoops 😬
I also mildly react to avocados (which makes me sad, so I just don't eat too much guacamole or in salads within a short time span), kiwi (hate them, easy to avoid), and carrots (the allergen is in the peel so I'm ok with peeled baby carrots or shreds that have been well washed after peeling). I also found out the hard way that carrot oil, used in some organic skin care, will give me an allergic chemical burn rash faster than you can read this post 😂 so no organic vitamin A or pre-made smoothies for me.
While I've long known the Body Mass Index (BMI) scale is a load of crap, I didn't realize just how problematic it was until more recently. Not only is it scientifically unfounded and medically inaccurate to correlate a person's weight with their health, but the entire history is rooted in the eugenics movement and systemic racism from the 19th & 20th centuries. Our entire concepts of obesity, body size = health, weight loss, et al are based in fabricated data utilizing unscientific methods.
To the point that last year the AMA that governs the medical ethics for all U.S. physicians published new guidelines on how, and how not, BMI should be utilized in patient care. They explicitly cite the scale's racist and unscientific origins, and how it has been used to perpetuate stigma and negatively impact patient care.
An article from the AMA that goes more in depth about the history of BMI and our concept of obesity as a medical issue.
The pandemic has created a strain on the plasma supply by creating higher demand and fewer donations. Only 3% of eligible whole-blood donors donate each year, and even fewer plasma donors do. Donating plasma is a commitment, but it can save the life of multiple people as the plasma gets broken down into multiple parts. Donated plasma gets turned into treatments for patients with Immunodeficiency (like me), autoimmune conditions, blood clotting disorders, and to treat certain infections like tetanus and rabies which would otherwise be fatal. More info on donating plasma.
@cuddlefaery Your plug for plasma donation was great. Have you ever shared your Story with your local blood bank or with Vitalant (aka BloodSource). Not for profits support other parts of blood collection and processing by selling plasma to fracturnators who turn it into other biotheraputics. It is a huge balancing act of needs because trauma patients with bleeding need the coagulation factors from ffp (fresh frozen plasma, less than 8 hours from separation). During the summer donation levels drop below need due to vacations ect. The winter donations are helped by altruistic holidays reminding the population to do good. Stories like yours help with public appeals and with worker motivation. Blood providers struggle with competition from hospitals who have massive payscales and draw away the laboratory scientists needed to make a safe product.
I have a few mins so I guess I will post one that's actually a fact.
If you don't get enough vitamin C you will get into the state of having scurvy and die. I believe most animals produce their own vitamin C, but humans lost the ability to produce their own vitamin C long ago and we are the weird ones that way.
Wow I learned more in this post than I did in school or with family 🫨
1.) Most health facts you hear have more disinformation than politics.
2.) Mental health impacts upwards of 65% of physical health.
3.) There is HUGE gender bias in health. 2000 calories a day is based on a man’s physical build and energy consumption.
1) Everyone's body has an internal concept of its own normal weight! That means that no matter how much you diet or exercise your body will always try to retain its own equilibrium based on your genetics. This is part of why so many people never really "arrive" at their goal weight and stay there, if you want to be smaller or bigger than your body's natural inclination you will always be fighting against it to maintain that change. It's also why a normal, non extreme level of diet and exercise often don't cause a massive change in the shape and size of our bodies, so basically no matter where you fall on the size spectrum it's best to work with your biology, not against it.
2) People used to believe a glass of wine a day was good for your health, but it turns out it was actually because the people that could regularly afford wine just had better access to healthcare. So (sadly for the wine lovers) it was wealth, not the wine that improved people's health. 😅
3) Losing and gaining significant amounts of weight quickly is super dangerous and rough on the body. While we've all been taught that thinner is better, it's actually been proven that losing weight fast in an attempt to improve health is super unhealthy. After significant weight loss (especially if it happened super fast) things like illnesses, surgeries and injuries have a much higher risk of complications and even fatalities.
Tl:dr, your body knows what's best for you, listen to it. Going to the Dr regularly (if you can afford it) and not ignoring health concerns significantly improves your quality of life, overall health and longevity on this planet. And don't fall for the fad diets and crazy "cleanses" that focus on losing weight fast or bulking up too quickly, it's not worth the risk of 😵!!
I've only got one. The immune system does not recognize your eyes.
The expression “You are what you eat” is only partially true. It would be more accurate to say “you are what you absorb”. Two people can eat the exact same thing in the exact same amount but what they absorb from it can be very different depending on several factors, the biggest one being the diversity of their gut microbiome.
The use of antibiotics (oral or topical) can kill off some gut bacteria that your body needs for properly digesting and extracting nutrients from what you eat. Likewise, some things we eat, such as sugar, promote the growth of less desirable strains of bacteria in your gut.
Good gut health is extremely important to your overall health. There are commercially available, at home tests you use such as Viome.com to check your gut health and get specific recommendations for you on what to eat and what to avoid based on what mix of bacteria you currently have in your gut.
@hoping4snugs I actually have! I do advocacy work for the Immune Deficiency Foundation when I can - I just haven't been able to do much the past year because of my health I was really hoping to do some of the plasma center visits and the walk for PI in San Francisco this year, but at this rate I won't be able to. I did sign up as virtual walk team though.... Been debating inviting y'all to join 😅🦓
@cuddlefaery
I donate plasma twice a week for past 5 years thanks for your explanation had no ideas of the magnitude of its impact
@FutureHeart2023 thank you 🙏🏻 I actually donated twice a month for a year myself, but I really struggled with it physically. Now I know why, and I'm kinda surprised they didn't catch it in screening since my IgG is pretty severely low without infusions (healthy range is 700-1600ish, with most healthy people around 1200. I'm 400-500 on a good month, can get up to 800 with infusions). And now since I receive blood products I'm excluded from donating 😅 oh well, it's for the best since I don't need to be giving away any of this expensive liquid gold!
