Are you a 0.5 percenter? More CC data analysis

Rather than more analysis of how many CC member are in U.S. or International cities, I decided to look at some other data for this installment of "CC by the Numbers".

I scraped data from every post made or edited June 14-20. That is 7 days worth of forum posts and I found the results interesting. First a disclaimer, forum usage varies week by week both in aggregate and by individual user.

Some members may be active for a while then get busy or just decide to take a break and not post anything for a while. The data below is simply a snapshot in time for this past week. The specific individuals posting the most may vary from week to week but what I find most interesting is not the individuals but the distribution - what % of CC users actually post in the forum at least 1 time per week?

Altogether, there were 1,679 post made between June 14-20 which is an average of 240 post per day or 10 post per hour. While there were heated discussions in some threads, there were many, many more "non-heated" posts in topics ranging from music to poetry to memes to cheese.

Over the course of 7 days, there were 205 individual members who posted at least 1 time. While those users are located around the world, it appears the vast majority are in the United States (but I did not take the time to look at profiles to see for sure what % were U.S. based).

The United States has approximately 40,600 monthly users on CC so even if all 205 of the people who posted were from the United States, that would mean only 0.5% of U.S. based CC users posted to the forum between June 14-20. Since I know at least a few of the 205 are located in the U.K., that means LESS THAN 0.5% of U.S. users posted to the forum during those 7 days.

Of the 205 people posted to the forum, 79 people only posted 1 time and 152 of the 205 (74%) posted less than once a day on average.

In fact, just 15 users accounted for over half (853 out of 1,679) of the posts during those 7 days (I will admit, I was #10 on that list with 39 posts over the course of 7 days). In fact, the distribution of frequency of posting closely follows the Pareto Principle (aka "The 80/20 Rule") with the top 20% of posters account for 75% of all posts.

Here is the breakdown of the 15 most frequent posters on the forum.

    I was messaging a new friend on here and made a comment about how crazy the forums are and she said she is never on them and didn't really know what I was referring to or talking about. Bless her for having such a care free existence on cc

    Yay me. Unfortunately it can take a lot to try to explain things to people, especially when multiple people keep trying to tell you things like that your experience is wrong and that you don't know your own identity. Not that I ever actually succeeded.

    @JohnR1972 Interesting. I really like all the data you share. I started engaging in forums during covid and the verbosity of some folks keeps surprising me. I must not talk much IRL. I wonder where your top 15 would sit in regards to length of posts?

    That's a small number of people that seem to dictate the tone of the forums. I'm not in that chart but i wonder how far i am from the top contributors, because im sure i comment much more than the average, id say im probably in the top 30. Im wondering if i should engage more or less.... considering im probably only talking to a few. Also my comment are probably not beneficial to anyone.

    A couple more observations from the forum posts made June 14-20...

    1) Of the 205 people who posted, 200 survived the week (5 were banned).
    2) The 1,679 post made were spread across 81 threads for an average of 20.7 posts per thread. (NOTE: Some of the threads were much older and contained MANY more posts. I only counted posts made during those 7 days regardless of when a thread was started).
    3) 3 of those 81 threads were locked during those 7 days.
    4) The top 10 most posted to threads accounted for 785 (46.8%) of all posts

    A couple of people above (including one who has been banned within the past hour) asked about whether I could rank contributors by content volume (i.e. word count). The simple answer is yes, but I intentionally chose not to.

    I do not want this thread to come off as an attack on anyone and if I had ranked by word count, it very easily could have come across as that way.

    Two other things I could have shared but chose not to...
    1) Network Analysis - analyzing who tags who and creating a network map showing how often each person communicates in public to specific people. Below is a simplified version of what I am talking about but the better visualization tools will make lines thicker for more frequent communication rather than making all lines the same weight. NOTE: more data could be added to color code people by age, gender, country, etc. if I had wanted to collect that data from profiles but I had no interest in doing that (I don't work for any 3 letter agencies but they do hire a lot of people like me).

    2) Sentiment Analysis - software can analyze the tone of posts based not only on keywords ("love", "appreciate", "stupid", "a**hole", "troll") but actually the context of the words. Sentiment analysis allows everyone who posted to be ranked not only on frequency of posts but on a "friendly - hostile" scale based on the tone of their posts. And yes, sentiment analysis can be overlayed with network analysis to color code each person's sentiment toward the people they are tagging as well as their general posts that do not tag anyone.

    Again, I chose to not include any of this in the analysis above because I did not want my analysis to be used to attack anyone.

    One final note: I did not even have to be logged into my CC account to access and data scrape the forums. If I had wanted to look at profiles of people who posted (I did not) I would have been able to see everyone's profile unless they had set their privacy setting to only make their profile visible to CC members rather than the general public.
