If you thought the AI driven “Terminator” robots were scary, wait till you see the AI politicians like “AI Steve” who is currently running for MP in the UK.

I once had someone tell me they would be happy to have an AI judge in the courtroom because it would be “completely unbiased”.

    Yeah the AS we have now barely English. They're still quite hopeless, but they do have the advantage of being able to see patterns in huge amounts of data that we struggle with so they can be useful in certain circumstances.

    I suppose the other advantage is that they're very quick with some tasks. This means they can try a million solutions to a problem and because a broken click is right twice a day one of them will work. The solutions can be very strange from a human perspective which is a good thing.

    Anyways I see them as a tool that's useful under certain conditions, just not all.

    Which might be even worse since such AI decisions, that I guarantee will be contaminated with programmed bias, will be assumed by many to be unbiased.

    Not to mention the fact that at a time when cities are asking people to keep their thermostats at 78 and not turn on the air conditioning, AI systems are consuming huge amounts of fossil fuel.

    The initial iterations of A.I. we're culled for exhibiting social-Darwinistic tendencies. Makes sense. Logic is the purest form of impersonal Darwinism.

    @JohnR1972 I found "I, Robot" to be even more unsettlingly realistic than Terminator, not just because there's not the whole time-travel component (and 6 installments with Arnie.)
    In "I, Robot," we humans created our AI overlords (which were made to look and be humanistic/friendly), which begets the quandry: were the robots/AI really taking away our freedom or did we give it away by being so vain and lazy?
    I see the similarities with AI Steve.

    @starrynitecuds - "I, Robot" is a great book (1950) and a pretty good movie (2004). I love that IMDb uses the word "technophobe" to describe Will Smith's character in that movie.

    The idea of a "technophobe" is someone afraid of new technology. While most of the public embraced the easy life that came about through technology (robots to do hard / mundane work us, AI to do our thinking for us), people who questioned the overall societal impact of such technology were dismissed as just "being afraid" of technology. 100% agree with your comparison of "I, Robot" to "AI Steve"

    NOTE TO EVERYONE: I am using the word "technophobe" as it applied to the movie @starrynitecuds mentioned - this is in no way a rehash of recent controversial threads.

    @WriterGF - Excellent point. According to an October, 2023 article in Scientific American, world wide data centers currently consume between 1.0 - 1.5% of global electricity generation. Experts are predicting that the power consumption for AI could increase "ten fold" in coming years.

    @starrynitecuds and @TxTom - I agree with both of your comments about the inherent bias within AI. Anyone who thinks AI will be free from bias has not been paying attention. How can biased humans (everyone one of us have them) create something that is unbiased? In addition (perhaps scariest of all) is that AI needs to be "trained" and it is being trained data scraped from sources ranging from TikTok & Wikipedia to Reddit and Facebook. Nope, nothing could go wrong there. I am sure AI will be free from all biases except against those lunatics who think the earth is spherical 😂😂

    @Sooson - Don't get me started on CBDC and social credit scores or I will be typing here the rest of the evening.
