I used to work physical security at a particular building on a naval base.

I was replaced by Common Access Cards + card readers. I remember the day they installed the card reader on my door. The next week, I was out of the job.

  • @OhioMike It’s very possible. 😂

Not quite yet, but I saw a video of some "driverless" semi-trucks. Chilled my ex-truck driver soul.. I typically feel like Will Smith's character on the movie "I, Robot" about such attempts at automation, though, so I'll just be quiet now..

@PinkMallo ~ Your post was quite comforting, and I fully agree! :)

  • Paperboy. Where's my $2? I want my $2!

  • @Fematheist - driverless trucks may appear on the Interstate but I expect to see them banned on other roads. Just too many human variables / unknowns for driverless vehicles anytime soon. It is bad enough for passenger vehicles but much worse for delivery vehicles.

  • In my teens I worked at 2 gas stations where we did check oil, tranny, cleaned front and rear windows and gas was 25-29 cents a gallon. One station even gave Green Stamps and we did oil changes also

  • @waynewv
I remember the days of the gas station attendant. And I don’t know if it’s still the case but for a long time, New Jersey did not allow any self-serve
I remember being a kid and driving into the gas station in our blue Plymouth station wagon and my dad saying “fill it up with regular “ And gas wars when it was $.19 a gallon.

  • @g_w_t_w , oh yes. I remember the gas wars also I bought gas for under 20 cents.
Do you remember the black rubber hose across the drive way that would ring the bell when driven over it. I have that set up in my home the bell is mounted in my 50’s room

  • Lol!😄 I was once one of those annoying shopping mall survey people. I would stand there in the mall (with my little clipboard and pen), stopping random people, to convince them to participate in product surveys.

The mall also doesn't exist here anymore!😆

It was funny watching a lot of people walk to the other side of the mall to avoid me pestering them.😁

Eventually they started offering cash to those who would participate in taking them, my mother would sometimes show up at the mall to participate in the surveys that paid between $20 to $75. Lol 😄

@achetocuddle: I do not miss using carbon paper.

Me either. It was convenient but messy and a bit clumsy. Being able to "hit print" is so much better. 😀

@achetocuddle: I used to work for the home office of a national chain restaurant in the early 80s. (cut text) I helped them so much they bought me a bracelet for Christmas, lol. Those were the days, especially when the test kitchen cooked and gave us the food. I ate all that food plus my regular 3 meals a day and was skinny as a stick.

Oh, that was a nice way for them to give you a little, personalized thank you. Sweet of them.

Yes, I remember being able to maintain my weight easier back 30 years ago too. 😁 Still, I'm grateful that I can be extremely active at 60 since those kind of things bring me a lot of joy.

I adore that movie. 🎥 one of my brothers favorite films. Always wanted to put my bike on skiis and see how well I can roll down off the slopes. 🤣

I was a paper girl too and many times if I could not collect or get the payment my brothers would accompany me. I took over all their routes so they knew who the usual non paying neighbors were.

They were totally respectful but would stand in the background with their various RBFs.

Funny how they would pay their BILL asap but also tip me. Newspaper family mafia 😂

We were not allowed to skip delivery if payment was behind. Odd that it was such a small bill but so many took advantage of the daily print and delivery.

Interned at a local news outlet, govt page, & candy-striper aka auxiliary nurse and worked on several small farms assisting in whatever they needed.

Mostly animal care, grain inspector and holding flashlights 🔦 while my family wrenched on tractors and motorcycles. Learned so much about engines and the tools to fix them.

Amish communities were fascinating to me as they used centuries old tools and methods. Food was stellar and the quilts were never short of intricate artwork 🖼️ from bygone eras.

I have a vast amount of odd jobs before even graduating high school but never made much money. However, priceless experiences I would not trade for the current world. My parents kept us all busy and loved that the cell phones and internet were not our primary focal points of growth.

  • So speaking of jobs. This is from an account of an enthusiast in my area. any thoughts?

  • @Sooson Well now, are you trying to say cuddling, or Cuddle Comfort, is nearly obsolete? B)

  • I had a route delivering the local newspaper.

  • This is what my account on CC says is my job 😂

  • @SunshineHug newspaper mafia is hilarious. Collecting the bill definitely needed muscle on the porch after a few attempts. Paper mache horseheads in the bed when they woke up!

  • Furling & Conveyance of Media Projectile.
