Small talk and texting

It's so hard being a talker living in a texting world.. I'm really not a fan of texting or messenger. I like to talk. I like to hear and be heard. It's much easier to explain things or for people to understand. I can't tell you how many times something has gotten Lost in translation through text or how many times I've been misunderstood. When people read things , they can choose what tone they hear it in. A joke can be mistaken as serious. I get many messages on here. I get many messages from people asking about booking Who never book.. Instead , they just message me every other day with small talk asking how i'm doing, Asking me about the weather, ect. So I just want to put it out there, If you have ever messaged me, And I seem a bit short. Just.
Know , i'm not a fan of texting or small talk On messenger. ❤️

  • Yes, tone and emotional context, such as humor, is much harder to convey in text messages.

  • hello huggaboo baby Your text here sure works for me. I could not agree more. Hearing all the tiny inflections of a live voice is the best. You cannot get to know someone via texting.....it's not possible. Many will disagree. I hate texting and small talk even in person lol With texting often people read what they want to hear, you've seen this, ya?

  • For the longest time I resisted texting. Now I dont answer a phone call unless it's one of a select few people. I dont always have the mental focus for a conversation. But if I were cuddling with someone, I'd keep it to a one-on-one conversation 😉.

@huggaboo_baby I feel you on this. This site doesn't have the capability, but if you look at my IG and Twitter DMs...I send voice messages A LOT. I wish I could do that here because I agree tone is very important. I am playful and sarcastic, but texts are sometimes not well received simply due to bad timing (ie person having a bad day). I do this with regular text messages, too. Saves my fat fingers the trouble of typing on a tiny keyboard as well. Plus a 5 min text session of "Do you want anything from the gas station?" could easily be discussed in under a minute with a phone call.

  • I hate talking on the phone, I even hate talking in person. Can we please just sit here and breath the same air.

  • I have to agree also…
I definitely prefer verbal communication - especially in person. Eye contact and body language add subtle nuances.
I have pain in my hands so I end up using the mic. Then because typos make me crazy, I feel like I must go back and edit. But then, if no one else does, why should I bother?
So then I am also very distracted by other’s mistakes in texting. And with texting, there’s so much laziness! I’m often annoyed by intentionally poor grammar because that person thinks they’re cool but just sounds stupid.
Misunderstandings can happen with misspellings and lack of punctuation.
**apologizing for MY errors because I don’t catch all of them!

  • I agree @huggaboo_baby and @g_w_t_w, in fact, I prefer in person best if possible. Part of why I like cuddling is the connection it creates with body language, tone, eye contact, etc conveying so much. However, comfort and energy level play a role, so texting can be lower than phone or in-person if people want or are more comfortable with that. Also misunderstandings suck and phone/in-person usually helps avoid that.

I love thoughtful conversation, I like being able to talk about different subjects at length, I'm not the best at texting and I truly dislike it. No one talks anymore, but than again gotta be so paranoid these days cause everyone's so delicate and offended at everything. Just easier not to say anything.

  • I like talking in person . Not on the phone.. lol

  • I'm a texter. Gives me time to organize my thoughts into words into sentences. And much harder to be talked over, or for people to interpret that half-second gap when I'm arranging the next sentence as me being done.

And addressing a few things said above, if you require eye contact, I'm not someone you want to talk to. Eye contact is difficult even to the point of pain for me. And I often tell people that if I'm looking away from them while they're talking, that means I'm paying more attention to what they're saying.

And a lot of information - especially from body language - is lost when it's only voice over a telephone. It gives me less to focus on, and there's no non-verbal cues on either side.

On a tangent, what would you (in general) do if you were with someone who had a verbal shutdown and needed to use an AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) app to communicate?

  • @huggaboo_baby same here! Ironically, I used to live in Arizona, too. ☀️ 🌵

  • Totally agree there are social miscues in texts. Not everyone is a good texter and unfortunately things can be misinterpreted. I find that ppl even get offended if you call without asking first via text!

I find a 2 min convo alleviates a lot of back n forth texting to avoid miscommunication. Sure texting has its time and place but yeah we all overuse it! I’m one of the odd ducks who doesn’t care if someone calls me. If I’m free I’ll pick up if not I won’t. Easy peasy!!

  • I agree. 100% nothing to add. But now i just want to convey my thoughts about talking on the phone. I really dislike talking on the phone now. And i was a talker in the day. From talking and walking around the house stretching the long ass cord, to cordless phones rolling around breaking the antenna. But to hold this contraption we carry against my ear, is in bearable. And the noise or hearing gaps on earbuds drives me crazy. I'm just against the whole thing. Rant over, please proceed.

  • I absolutely agree also I can have a dark sense of humor or weird sometimes and I learned it’s always a good idea to hold back on so things until I can feel the receiving ends vibe rather than assume they get it. The last thing I want to do is make someone uncomfortable and not be aware of it.

  • I agree to what u all are saying.. Unfortunately , our future is making us so contactless..

  • Definitely a tedter but can also talk also hours on the phone im a hybrid. Texting allows me to respond when I'm at work or with family

When phones had cords I preferred talking in person. When pagers came out, using the phone was fine.
When I got my first cell phone with the attena and flip part for the speaker I hated texting. But I would be on college.com forum consistently.
Eventually people get to be too busy to talk so texting became a thing. Now I primarily text, with little to no reply from me or who im texting, even if its my mom 🧏
I have seen my nature change, like Mike Jack said why why.... its human nature...
To do what other people are doing for communication. I think one day though I am going to bring back the pager and the landline pencil and paper.

I miss pen and paper letters. Emails are much faster to do, but I think less thought goes into them as a result.

We would like to discuss your vehicle's extended warranty.

    LOL!

But seriously, I've talked to people who now talk like they text because they are so used to communicating in a flaccid way and never face to face. We need to slow down and engage in each other's hearts face to face.

  • I used to exclusively like talking outloud, but recently it depends on the situation.

Slack at my previous job made texting easier to troubleshoot issues, especially since you can look up previous solutions to a problem. Also if asking for passwords to streaming services on the family group chat or pics of the pup, easier to search too.

For a more personal touch (wishing happy birthday or checking in on someone at the hospital), I like to call.

  • That's what's wrong with today's world. With social media and the internet in general people have quickly forgotten how to communicate via anything other than texting.

  • I agree, huggaboo. I like face to face communication the most. So much is said besides words.

Lol the weirdest preference I've seen is voice messages. Back and forth. Sometimes it's quick replies and it's like, "why aren't we just talking".
