Back in the 80s I had chronic shoulder pain, and as far as I could tell it was from overhead pressing. I did specific stretches, very reluctantly had some cortisone shots, etc. but nothing seemed to help.

So I went to a surgeon for a consult and he wanted to remove a piece of bone from my shoulder to "relieve pressure."

I kept trying things and reading books (internet wasn't a thing) until finally I learned that my pain was possibly because I had a muscle imbalance. So I trained my shoulders differently, and gradually in about six months my pain was gone.

I didn't say anything about it and just moved on. I started wondering if a bunch of doctors couldn't figure this out, what else don't they know and I started thinking that there was pretty serious compartmentalization going on with medical training that I didn't realize when I was in my 20s.

Didn't necessarily heal them myself, but have had a few times where I was misdiagnosed because "it was all in your head or you need to lose weight". This was for two separate health issues, 5 doctors the first issue, and 3 doctors the second. Both resulted in surgery, the second issue required emergency surgery after 3 separate ER visits within 2 weeks. My PCP saw me the 2nd week, finally, before the emergency surgery and had me do an Ultrasound. About 2 more weeks after emergency surgery I got the Ultrasound results back 🫤. And they told me I needed surgery asap, a few weeks too late.

  • My teenager had a severe medical issue arise suddenly. When we walked into the specialist's office, I gave him my diagnosis (which was rare for that age and gets progressively worse.) Insert his eyeroll. His diagnosis was wrong, so his idea of treatment wasn't nearly aggressive enough, and we lost precious days trying to believe in him, aggravating the condition. I knew it wasn't right, but he was the "specialist." I sent an email to a medical specialist at a world-renowned teaching hospital and had a reply in an hour.
"Bring her to this address as soon as possible."
No appointment. We arrived 2 hours later. She was seen the minute we checked in.
The new medical team was comprised of experts; there has been an ongoing study (not just part of a study, but THE study) since the correct diagnosis more than a decade ago.
I won't apologize for being a Google Doctor and ripping the original "specialist". I sent him, and his hospital, a strongly worded letter. He refused to listen because "that's not possible." As if science doesn't happen.

  • I've had two different doctors lie to me, both told the same lie twice. I left them both immediately, although I'm still in the office of one of them. They both share an ethnicity.
Always be IN CHARGE of your own health, this is very important, do your own snooping research, question what you don't understand and never be afraid to get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion.

@Jack62 What does their ethnicity have to do with anything?

  • My ex wife had a..well not trying to be too graphic.....but had foul odor or smell coming from down below we went to doctor they ran urine and blood tests all came.back normal they was dumbfounded. Went to a woman's facility they did a physical inspection still nothing they essentially gave up.

I did my own research told my wife to sit in hit bathtub with packed with 50% baking soda and after an hour blood came out a tampin that wqs super stuck deep deep inside. Only 1 hour later smell wqs completely gone.

Further research I discovered had that stayed there she would have gotten toxic shock syndrome which wqs deadly I effectively saved her life

  • Everytime i go to any dr. The recommend the same advice. Mind you all of the blood work, tests, heart tests, sugar test, cholesterol test, blood pressure etc being consistently in range other than weight are in the ranges. Usually right in the middle. I am recommended not to drink sugary sodas, avoid red meat etc. i haven't done either in over 10 years. The one thing i have done recently was increase my caloric intake and that's dropped a large amount of weight.

I guess the first thing they always suggest to me ( i usually am most concerned about pain) is no drinking, smoking, meat and sugar.... all things I've come to realize myself long ago. But i guess everything is standardized so the recommended actions are as well.

Don’t listen to dentists that tell you you need a digital exam.

Or at least get a 2nd opinion.

  • WriterGF thanks for your question, I would have said the same but it happened to me. Out of probably over 50 doctors in my life only two lied to me that I know of and the fact that they both were from the same place didn't escape me. I think there are cultures that don't value truth the way some others do.

@Jack62 Not even going to touch that.

  • Nothing too serious, but I discovered I had some form of IBS/Lactose Intolerance on my own as the GP didn't seem remotely interested because of my young age at the time. Easily managable now though

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, my doctor had me on a few medicines. One day, my wife at the time called me at work to say she had just seen one of the pills caused serious heart problems. When I called the doctor about it, she said, "Oh, yes, I was going to tell you next time you came in." I wasn't due in for another three months.

  • Doctors never admit their mistake, it hurts their ego. I told a doctor that drinking water makes me dizzy and they didn't believe me and said it was not possible :). I was able to solve the issue. Sometimes when I share my opinion, they think I am a doctor too and that's funny. Seeing their face amuses me when I tell them I am not a doctor. The surprise on their face is priceless!
