H.S. Class reunion invoked strong and mixed emotions

edited August 2024 in General

I recently attended my high school class reunion. It was the first reunion I had attended since graduation and I don’t use Facebook so I had not seen hardly anyone from my class in 40 years.

About 25% of my class attended and I learned a full 10% of my class has already passed away. I immediately recognized a couple of old friends as well as a couple of the more “popular kids” from my class (feels weird writing that given we are all rapidly approaching 60).

Several classmates recognized me and were familiar with some of my activities. I am not famous but my name and photo appear in the news a couple times per year due to the nature of my professional and volunteer work).

I wasn’t sure what to expect other than a lot of thinning / greying hair among my classmates. I think what surprised me the most was the different perspective I had by the end of the reunion. I was pretty introverted in school and assumed the girls I was interested in were unapproachable and not interested in me.

I found out by the end of the reunion that at least 2 of them thought I was unapproachable 40 years ago because of my academic reputation. When one of them told me I was always the smartest member of our class I dismissed the comment as flattery. Then she pulled out our senior yearbook and flipped to an article about me being a National Merit Scholarship Finalist (I did not win it and had completely forgotten about it).

MUCH to my surprise I had 3 women ask me to dance with them - it almost felt like a Rom-Com movie since I never went to a single dance in high school. I warned each of them that I am not a dancer but I was willing to give it a try with them (no alcohol was involved so I was well aware of how bad of a dancer I was, but I was not going to pass up the opportunity).

Anyway, my head is still spinning from all the memories and 80s music so I thought I would share. Have you attended any of your class reunions? What was your experience like?

  • My 40 year is coming up…if I go, it’ll be the first one I’ve attended. Been thinking a LOT about the 1980s.

  • @TheNewNovelist
I would encourage you to go. I didn’t know what to expect but I am really glad I went to mine.

  • Hi,

Definitely want to go. Been on my “bucket list” for years.

  • Funny you should mention bucket list. There was a memorial set up for several members of our class who had passed away. Between the dinner and the live music, someone made an announcement about several other members of our class who had passed but nobody knew about it in time to add them to the memorial.

That memorial was very sobering realizing that it will get larger at every reunion 🥲

  • Interesting accounts. I attended three different high schools. I never felt the urge to attend a reunion.

  • I graduated in 2000 so I doubt they had a reunion in 2020 due to covid. I assume one needs to provide their info somewhere to be notified of the reunions, though I had never done that. I am worried if I went I wouldn’t recognize anyone and would just stand there awkwardly before dipping out 😅

  • They tore down my high school lol, and I'm glad that place was nothing but misery and bad memories. My school was the place they sent kids that couldn't make it at regular schools, so learning disabilities, anger issues, special needs. A lot of trades classes.

  • Do people even live in the same state after so many years?

  • On Facebook most have gained weight and such and look older than me :-). Most haven’t attended various reunions, but the ones that do it’s fine. But I don’t miss those days just the music

  • Of the 25% of my class who attended the reunion, about 2/3 of them still lived in state. Of the 65% still living who did not attend, I have no idea where they live but my guess is a greater percentage of them do live out of state.

I went to my 10 and 20 year reunions. They tried for our 30 (2021- COVID closures/scheduling) and what might have been the "30+1" or (+2) ended up being cancelled altogether. The staff that worked on it tried to get something going but eventually the venue refunded their deposits and stopped. We've joked several times on our private page to just throw something together in FL and people will show.

My 10 was OK, sat with a few aquaintences and after dinner the group of about 10-12 said we're done, follow us and go to Christine's and drink, etc. It was better than being bored, so off we all went, hung them for a couple of hours and went home. I don't drink so I was fine to drive.

20 year was a bit better even though less attended. Saw my first girlfriend from 8th grade (only lasted about a week, LOL) and talked a bit. Met a few other friends (added 3 or 4 to Facebook), ate etc, joined the group photo. I'm not sure whether they liked/disliked how I was dressed (not that I really cared). I wore a pair of dress shorts, a peach colored "Bahama" style lightweight shirt and boat shows. Living in the South and driving 750 miles to the NE, I was going how I wanted since I was usually on the outside of most of the cliques. I never fit in the Preppies, Squids (skateboarders), Jocks, etc. I hung on the fringe of the "Burn-outs" who back then could smoke on campus. I was more into my Walkman and rock/80's hair bands, boats and trying to get decent grades.

Our graduating class was huge-over 1000 students- and we've unfortunately lost quite a few to traumatic events. Car crashes, OD's, murdered, war (and post-effects), cancer, etc. And there have been a couple of those losses that just shake you for various reasons as I either knew them (class, homeroom etc) or had a "big name" that everyone in school knew.

I am with you, the music was one of the best parts of the 80s. One of my classmates became a professional musician and he provided the live music and sang a lot of music that was popular while we were in high school.

I have not attended a class reunion. Moved on to college and life and didn't look back.

Interesting reading about others reactions to high school. Personally, I have nothing but amazing memories from grades 9–12. I played four sports, academically did well enough to attend an Ivy League university.

I still get together about four times a year with 9 other guys that I have known since 7th grade. As the years have passed we might tend to only remover the good times but in general there were a plethora of them to remember.

I have attended every reunion from the 10th on and have always had a great time.

  • I know 5 people who have attended their class reunions and reunited with their high school sweetheart. Four resulted in marriages (3 had to get divorced first), one is "complicated."
(Two of the 5 people were in my class.)

  • Went to my 25th reunion in March. It was my first one, I only traveled there because it was my moms 70th birthday that weekend also (perfect timing).
I learned that I’m already in touch with who I want to be, the “popular” kids just got drunk, it was ridiculous. Happy to never go again.

  • I guess one question I’m wondering is, what made you approachable now ?

  • @sunnysideup
Good question and I have been thinking about that a lot since the reunion. I seriously don’t feel like I changed in that regard. I was approachable (and would have loved to have been approached) in high school. However, I think I might have inadvertently been giving off a different vibe because I excelled academically and others may have made the wrong assumptions about me.

In hindsight, the people I saw as “unapproachable” may have also been approachable but inadvertently gave off a different vibe.

I think all of us breaking out of our roles for 40 years and gaining a lot of life experience is what made the difference. The old assumptions had faded on both sides.

  • I missed my 5 year, but made the 10, 20, and 30 traveling each time. Really enjoyed seeing some of the folks. They recently had an elementary school reunion as well, which I didn't make. We tried for a 35 and no one stepped up to plan. I'm out of state so not really able to do it. 40 coming up soon, haven't heard anything yet.
The 10 year all the same folks did the same things, 20 and 30 people were better behaved, for lack of a better term

  • Might as well go while most ppl are still alive.
