    Every week of October leading up to Halloween we can do a weekly movie watch and get together to talk about the movie of the week.

    WEEK 1) psychological thriller - American Psycho

    Summary: In New York City in 1987, a handsome, young urban professional, Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), lives a second life as a gruesome serial killer by night. The cast is filled by the detective (Willem Dafoe), the fiance (Reese Witherspoon), the mistress (Samantha Mathis), the coworker (Jared Leto), and the secretary (Chloë Sevigny). This is a biting, wry comedy examining the elements that make a man a monster.

    WEEK 2) zombie horror - Dawn of the Dead

    Summary: When her husband is attacked by a zombified neighbor, Ana (Sarah Polley) manages to escape, only to realize her entire Milwaukee neighborhood has been overrun by the walking dead. After being questioned by cautious policeman Kenneth (Ving Rhames), Ana joins him and a small group that gravitates to the local shopping mall as a bastion of safety. Once they convince suspicious security guards that they are not contaminated, the group bands together to fight the undead hordes.

    WEEK 3) paranormal horror - The sixth sense

    Summary: Young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. Cole is frightened by visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. He is too afraid to tell anyone about his anguish, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis). As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the truth about Cole's supernatural abilities, the consequences for client and therapist are a jolt that awakens them both to something unexplainable.

    **Week 4) body horror - Saw

    Summary: Photographer Adam Stanheight (Leigh Whannell) and oncologist Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) regain consciousness while chained to pipes at either end of a filthy bathroom. As the two men realize they've been trapped by a sadistic serial killer nicknamed "Jigsaw" and must complete his perverse puzzle to live, flashbacks relate the fates of his previous victims. Meanwhile, Dr. Gordon's wife (Monica Potter) and young daughter (Makenzie Vega) are forced to watch his torture via closed-circuit video.

    Oct 1st is here hahaha (insert maniacal laughter) I’ve been on the Halloween 100 day countdown like every year but now it’s oct and acceptable to wear costumes all 31 days! I am definitely open to snuggling up while watching a scary movie and wearing a goddess of the night costume or a princess dress haha happy October everyone!!!

    @Savi_Luna yeah I think any costume would be fun. I actually did have a cuddle session last Halloween with a pro here. We watched a scary movie. It was fun.

    that lingers into the wee hours, a little lightening, a bump in the night down the hall, a pet staring at 'nothing' across the room and sharing the scariness-anticipation-factor (idk is that a thing) ...yikes, I'm shivering already, but sounds like fun ...I think

    Continuing the horror book countdown to Halloween.
    We’re finally 29 days away!!

    To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?”

    When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay.

    Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

    @steve900 it has been a while since I’ve seen that movie, I remember the feeling of being scared so it did its job. I can’t remember, did they do a remake of it recently?

    "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in 1892. I read this short story a couple months back and it absolutely delightfully in a dark psychological way. The story is a women who is kept in a room with yellow wallpaper and she absolutely hates this wallpaper. Over time she begins to see a woman in the wallpaper and the woman is trying to get out. She starts trying to help her out only to become the woman in the wallpaper. She’s now in the wallpaper and not wanting to leave.

    Later on, I discussed this read with a women history teacher and she had told me the meaning behind the story is about how people saw women’s mental health in the 1800s.
    This story was meant to walk us through postpartum depression and how it got slipped under the rug as “hysteria.”

    When I was super young I watched the shinning terrified me. Also saw the Blair witch project and that got me for a minute. Jaws kept me out of the pool, tub and off the toliet

    @MegaSnugglez the Blair witch project is one of the most brilliant horror movies out there. The actors were given a camera and told to go into the woods and act scared.
    We never saw anything but they did a freakin great job at making us feel like there was something.

    Also i remember being in 3rd grade scared of toilets cause i thought a zombie was going to come out of them and pull me in. Ugh what an embarrassing imagination 😂

    @MajesticMango The Yellow Wallpaper sounds amazing! I'm going to try and find a copy to read. It sounds like it'd be a great short film to direct too!

    I finished a short film myself this year that uses Carnival of Souls as part of the story. Anyone see Carnival? It's from 1962, so it's tame, but I really love it. Free to watch on YouTube.

    When I was growing up, my dad loved scary movies, so when I was about 8 or 9, we all watched The Exorcist (which to me is the scariest movie of all time). My older brother snuck into my room that night, got under my bed, and started shaking the mattress. If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about. I was so freaked out I slept on the floor for the next couple of years... until he finally fessed up.

    Believe it or not, I've never seen The Sixth Sense - so I will for sure tap that one! ☑️

    I've seen the others, but will totes watch Dawn of the Dead again! My boyfriend and I will resume where we left off in the Saw series, now that it's October. I only started seeing them for the first time with him the past couple of Halloweens.

    My childhood was extremely conservative, so nearly everything Halloween-related, let alone horror-related, is new to me! The fun side effect being nothing has scared me yet... 😆

    @MajesticMango I agree. The Blair Witch Project is an underrated classic.

    The audio track is incredibly important in that film. It seemed to me that folks who watched the film in a theater loved it, while those who watched it at home (with a sub par audio) usually didn't like it.

    The marketing was terrific. If I remember correctly, the actors were practically sequestered until opening day to create the impression of it being a true story.

    I think The Blair Witch Project was the first "found footage" genre.

    Inspired by the movie, I made a bunch of stickmen and hang them around the house for Halloween. Fun, easy, extremely cheap, and quite effective decorations.

    Cannibal holocaust was one of the first found footage movies to be filmed and let me tell you, that one I had to turn away from. I’ve watched it twice and both times I couldn’t stomach the real life animal killings.

    ⛔️ Summary: trigger warning ⛔️

    It’s about a group of American journalists who go out into the jungle and they meet with the native jungle people that live there to find out what happened to the first group of people who went to shoot a documentary about the jungle. While searching for the missing people they run into the jungle people and forming bonds with them. They find the missing groups dead body hanging in trees along with the films that they shot. When they go back through and watch the films they see that the documentary crew burned down the villages of the native people and r*ped the women and then burned them alive. It circles back to the question of who are the real savages.

    Anyways, I want to say the director of the movie got sued cause people believed it was a real snuff movie and the actors had to go to court and testify that they were still alive.
    All the animal killings in the movie are real though.
    I also want to say but I’m not for certain but, the director was murdered over this film.

    @MajesticMango: Great story, I agree. One of my favorites. Charlotte Gilman Perkins was an interesting person and certainly a trailblazer, during her time, for women's rights.

    Last year at my apartment complex on Halloween, I hosted a movie screening of the original Scream movie. Had a decent turnout. That opening sequence is still incredibly tense even after watching countless times.

    Love that franchise! Own 1-5, the later two were impressive for their creativity. Refused to see the 6th since didn’t feature Sidney Prescott.
