An airport in New Zealand has put a three-minute time limit on hugs. Anything longer, patrons are requested to go to the car park.

I wonder if that is a consecutive 3 minutes or a total of 3 minutes.

I think this is an important matter and should be taken a little more seriously: The length of the hug allowed should be a faction of the closeness of the relationship and the expected separation time. Examples: For a sibling or a child you will not be seeing again for about 6 months - 2 minutes and: 20 seconds. If you drop off a second cousin at the airport that only shows up for weddings and funerals: half a second.

The part that fascinates me about this is how this became a problem that needed to be addressed in the first place.
I mean, the airport isn't going to make this a rule for a one time occurrence unless that one time caused a lot of damage.
Which means long term hugging must have become such a major issue to the point that it was interrupting their business. Was it something to due with the airport itself or something to do with New Zealanders?
I have so many questions. I should probably look into this.

I’m sure there is a technological solution. Using the NFC chip in cell phones, we can detect how close 2 people are to each other. If two people’s phones are within 12” of each other for more than 3 consecutive minutes Google could make both phones start playing a recorded message telling them to separate. They could even sell the app to overly protective parents to put on their kids phones 😂
If you fly in and out of the Las Vegas airport you’ll know that three minutes is a lifetime! The attendants that police that area get really aggressive if it takes longer than (1) screech to a stop at the curb, (2) hop out like your tail is on fire , (3) snatch your bags and run like you stole them.
One got in my face in my early morning daze once and I was less than kind in my response. I was threatened with arrest.
I have seen them glare and start moving people along during brief hugs.
It was surreal and they were a law unto themselves at peak airport traffic times.
The kiwi sign is a lot nicer about it.
@WriterGF That's hilarious. Why wouldn't they just say, Curb Parking 3 Minutes? 😆 Why target hugs, specifically? Too funny. I'm guessing they've had a lot of issues with PDA's that went too far...
@lovingspoonfull Absolutely. I've was nearly brought to tears the first time I drove to an airport. I'm talking MapQuest, here. 😅 I was a nervous wreck trying to make sure I got to the right place in the gigantic international airport. I parked for like 15 seconds and was texting the person I was picking up to see how close they were. A traffic dude blew his whistle and came up to my window yelling in my face that if my passenger wasn't there when I pulled up, I had to get out. Of course, as soon as I pulled away, they walked out, but I had to do the seven-minute loop to get back to them.
Needless to say, when my boyfriend flew from Nevada to Virginia to meet me, I offered to pay for an Uber to pick him up from the airport and calmly drop him off to me at a restaurant. I didn't want us meeting under stressful circumstances, like that!

A local airport near me has little parking lots for text/waiting, these are perfect for bye hugs. In front shouldn't be held up with dramatic PDAs.
But dramatic PDAs are a goal in life and a way of overcoming structural relationship problems with flamboyant gestures of affection. And they’re only more real if lots of strangers witness them and begin rooting the two huggers on. At least if many Hollywood movies can be believed? 😇
Edit: Wow that came out snarkier than intended. 🤣. But for real, a nice happy hug warms the heart. Drama and traffic clogging don’t.

And I completely forgot that one, great example! I never did forget New Yorkers letting some guy crowd surf them to his lady. Pretty sure that’s not the reaction we’d see in a subway…
