Making friends

Hello I don’t know if this is a thread on here. However it comes to my attention that there’s a lot of loneliness in the world and frankly not that many people who have true friends anymore. As someone with a disability it seems harder and harder to make friends. What do yall do to make some friends out in this world as young adults?

I'm definitely not young [and as someone recently told me - I'm actually past my cuddling prime] but I can make friends anywhere. grocery store, as Starbucks, library you name it. As an extrovert this has always been me

  • I'm not young, but I've made a lot of friends at science fiction conventions. They're full of people who are my kind of weird. I'm actually visiting someone from a science fiction convention right now, who I had to drive for several hundred miles to see. And soon I'm also visiting the person who pretty much introduced us.

  • I’ve read a few articles about GenZ and them being less social in the way my generation (boomers) have been and not sure how accurate that is. Maybe just very different. We didn’t have any other way to meet other than going out to socialize. Now every interaction seems to be based online and social media is like an echo chamber. Young people are so focused inward.
I will hit the big 75 next week but nearly all people I spend time with are in late 30s/40s because I relate well to that age. I’ve made several new friends in Seoul who are young, we go out for coffee or dinner mostly. Many people my age annoy the hell out of me, I don’t relate to their perspective.
In fact, except for brothers who I don’t really agree with about anything, I don’t spend in-person time with anyone my close to my age.

  • I'll be your friend, but I'm in brooklyn

Blackmail has yielded unprecedented results for me.

  • @jr17 in all honesty, your question embodies a false presupposition. Your suggestion that true friendship doesn’t exist anymore couldn’t be more false. True friendship has always been rare and precious; it was never common, but it does and will continue to exist.

It starts with friendliness, openness to meet people wherever you’re at, and a willingness to be interested enough in them to be a friend to them. Call it naive, but people respond to your genuine interest in them, and will reciprocate. Sometimes it results in a passing friendly acquaintance, sometimes a friendship, sometimes a romance, and sometimes it grows into a deep relationship that becomes closer than family.

@KittyPukka WTF?! What does past your cuddle prime even mean? Hope you tossed that rock head to the curb with that nonsense.

  • @KittyPukka uh oh. At 51 I feel like it's a perfect age for cuddles I also consider my age and life experience to be a major contribution to how I interact with others. My empathy and patience and acceptance has grown exponentially over the last decade or so! And cuddles are good for every age!!
To the OP- common interests are key. And it's true that finding friends isn't easy. I've made some genuine ones here on CC. Always be you. And remember you have to be a friend to make a friend. 🤗

  • @Auroradream
    Would you be my friend?

  • @Dance_Culture I'll be your friend

  • I joined a yoga studio last year that has a focus on building “community.” As such they host non-yoga events that the members can attend and get to know one another outside of exercise class. I have some photos in my profile from a trip to Morocco that we did together and we have also done hikes, meals, book talks, and charity volunteering. I’m an ambivert so sometimes it is easier for me to have structured activities to meet people rather than just feeling confident to walk up and start an interaction.
@KittyPukka I find it laughable for one person to inform another that they are past their cuddling prime, whatever that may be. I hope you haven’t internalized it at all and realize that comment says more about them than you! I started cuddling at 52 and feel like it has opened my heart and mind to so many new growth experiences!

Being a friend in public requires IMO attention to how you'll be viewed by your current social peer status. If there is a narrative the risks are even greater. To be completely free of biased thought is next to impossible for most but it's a main focus for me. I will associate with everyone, anyone.

You get multiple chances, don't care who you are. So if you want a friend I'm here.

  • @Dance_Culture will it look weird for use to hang out in public since you are twice my age ?

  • Haha weird to who?

  • Your current social peer status

When I was younger those types of things concerned me, if I'm looking at people from a category mindset, I would amend my looks or actions to fit.

But if you're a decent person I could care less how it looks. People that want friends and are friendly become friends.

Unless you've got something that works outside of your comfort, and that's also cool. No judgement here. Ever.

@KittyPukka wrote, "and as someone recently told me - I'm actually past my cuddling prime"

Aw, that seems a bit mean of them to say. I would add "for them" since it sounds to me like the person is stating their preference and a preference isn't a universal truth.

As for the OP's question, I make friends in the world by just being friendly to people while going about my life and sometimes I meet people with common interests and occasionally a friendship grows.

Most of my friends are based around shared activities, but over time a couple of my friends have grown beyond that. I find that a reliable barometer for that being a possibility is if we stay in contact when the shared activity goes away or lessens, and if we both contact each other rather than just one of us always being the one to reach out.

  • Nothing strange about being friends with someone when there's a big age gap.

  • @jr17
In my work life I deal with people on occasion with Cerebral palsy and that may use powered medical equipment. (We sell them) Like power wheelchairs and such. On interviews with them (as the video guy) I learned to be completely free of anything but love and care. Cause they are people. I'm a person. They smile I smile. It's the mind you are interacting with. Once we all get past all of our hangups we can move forward as people. A lot of genuine folks out there, don't give up on us.

@Dance_Culture: I had what you said highlighted to me in the 90s in college when I held a door overly long for a woman in a way that I wouldn't have if she hadn't been in a wheelchair and she scolded me, but then we became good friends through college and we graduated together.

And if I needed a reminder, which I hope I didn't, I got one driving paratransit for several years until Covid came along and put us all out of a job.

  • @HarleyGirlKate
Thats awesome, and give it right back at her, (hurry it up lady) she wants to be respected not coddled.

Made great friends with many people in many situations and at the end of the day, we all want the same stuff.

Your heart is there, trust it. We all have vulnerabilities some show more than others.

  • @Dance_Culture sure, let's be friends 😁

  • @FunCartel_ Another good thing to keep in mind is that it will be you that gets blamed for the blackmail. Call me old fashioned but I'm just a kind of guy that feels if you don't want me to use personal information against you then you shouldn't have told me in the first place.

  • I love to make friends. But not everyone is into friendship. I can’t be too friendly at work because then people want stuff for free. But I joined this site because I do like to cuddle and give massages so I figure it’s a win win. But I do have some anxiety about being new at something like this. Hope everybody is doing ok

  • I would like to meet friends on here. If that’s possible also. Forgot to add that part. Sorry.
    Thanks for your time also

  • I know a small group of ladies who are my neighbors all very much older than me, it's super hard to make friends as a single mom. And don't let me get started on dating 😂😂

  • @KittyPukka ”past your cuddling prime” at 37? Tell your friend that’s an idiotic statement.

  • I never considered there was an age limit on cuddling. What does that even mean

  • @Mike102

This here might be too old 🤪

  • I’m always making friends through social media tbh. Through here, through TikTok, through Facebook. Of course I want to meet my friends someday.
