The language differences between French and English are definitely a factor! Thinking of “Je t’aime” because in my high school French class we were taught it could mean both I like you or I love you but that was ages ago and now there might be a different more popular way to say it but I’m really far behind. I need to find a French language group meet-up in Dallas to brush up on the language. I’ve forgotten a lot!
Oh yeah definitely... "je t'aime" can almost have a different meaning for each person depending of the nature of the relation, the context, and even have variants. For example, "je t'aime bien" can be used with a friend because in that case it means "I like you" or "I appreciate you". But I would not say that to a stranger, a collegue or an acquintance. Languages are complex! ^^
Exactement, mon ami 😊
I don't speak other languages, but in English i think words mean things and i believe when words are use i try and take them how they should be intended before i consider the more colloquial use. If i need clarification i ask. Now i do understand that people, in this sites forums, are particularly sensitive to things implied without being said, but i personally don't. I tend to not imply things and i don't assume beyond what a word or term truly is, but i guess i don't every get the hint. I also believe that context in an entire thought tells the same overall meaning. I can often tell when someone uses a word wrong all together. Now, i may be sensitive some words and in certain context the way a word is used in a certain context can triggering to me, but i then will need to force clarification before i take a negative position.
Affection is a great example if one of these words for me. It means something and it isn't sexual, it takes context in the sentence to make it that way. A great example for a triggering word for me is colored or coloured, when i see it or hear it i pay close attention to the context and speaker to decide if its used in a way that offends my sensibilities. It quite often isn't, even though there is a rich history of the word being used in a way that bothers me. So as the audience to someone's speak i think it's on me to be able to infer what's being said rather than the specific words and/ or deal clarity.
Just sharing my perspective on that. But this is my trigger and a recurring theme with me. I tend to always chime in on this type thing and probably should learn not to. I should probably just do it how i do it and let everyone else alone. So I'll go back to watching Netflix and just chill.
In the world, where most women are highly triggered by even the vaguest hint that you might have something sexual on your mind, and every man is by default seen as extremely guilty until proven innocent,
Fixed that for you
