How 'bout this.... Put a 1 if yes, and a 0 if not.. no harm, no foul...

[Deleted User]Homesteader (deleted user)

Hey Folks! I was wondering... I like to click on people's profiles. Sometimes, I'm intrigued, sometimes I'm not. What I was wondering was: what if, when we click through to a profile, that we send the person a message... 1 if we would be open to interacting, a 0 if we've, for whatever reason, decided we have no further interest and are moving on?

Having put this out on the open forum, I'm going to now adopt this policy! lol NO, you aren't "obligated" to do anything << for the Pitchfork Posse...

It would just be fun to KNOW, for sure, that a person was open to further contact. Maybe you looked at a profile because of a fun picture, then clicked through to find that the person was a snake handler. No problem, next! lol (I like snakes-- Serpent is one of my totems. Bite me.)

Any thoughts? Do you feel that this would help or harm? Wouldn't you like to know? Have you ever wondered, or wanted to ask someone what made them click on your profile? :)

  • Good idea!

  • Sounds like a coding class.

This is something you can already do just by messaging them, right? I know I don’t have any interest reaching out to someone just to tell them why I am not interested in reaching out to them further…that’s also info I could do without from other members. Please correct me if I am reading this wrong though.

Seems a little bit unnecessarily cruel. Nobody needs more rejection from people they have not even expressed an interest in meeting. I certainly don't need a bunch of 0's cluttering up my inbox. If you aren't interested in someone, just don't get in touch at all.

  • Well I'm a professional, so I'm sure it's different for me. But I let people message me first, unless they have viewed my profile several times or there is something really intriguing about their page or something I feel we really have in common.

If someone views my page once and I never see them again, I just assume they weren't interested in either chatting or booking with me. All good! 😊

  • I personally don't think anyone should be messaging people just because they clicked on your profile. I HATE it when I click on one and I get what seems like an automated invitation. If I want to schedule an appointment I would reach out. I click on people all the time in these discussions just to see who they are/what they're talking about and don't need them messaging me to tell me we're too far apart. Yeah, no shit. Lol. Did that make sense? Short answer is I applaud your creativity but I see no point in this particular exercise.

    I’m at least a 6

  • I would welcome some way to find out about yes's. But I don't want to see a bunch of rejection emails.

Awesome, awesome feedback!!! Thank you, all!!! :)

@TxD00d ~ Thanks! Wouldn't it be fun to have a CLEAR SIGNAL given that would let you know that someone, for whatever reason, was open to corresponding? I think that would be fun! :)

    Hahahaha! F you, @TheFunCartel !! lololol

@CharlieBear ~ You're not reading it wrong, and thank you for the insight! What I HADN'T considered was what @WriterGF termed the "unnecessarily cruel" nature of such a thing. Thank you, also, for that perspective.. I can see how that would hit extra hard. Thanks for the perspective adjustment! :) Okay, maybe just put a 1 in if you WERE open to further communication? Following that thought, then people would be wondering why others DIDN'T put a 1... Got it...

@AlyLauren ~ You make a lot of sense. I'm always delighted when our Pros weigh in! Like you said, it's probably best to always assume that if someone doesn't make contact that they're not interested... Makes sense..

I just thought that there might be a way of "dog-whistling" to one another, after we've visited profiles, that we'd be willing to interact.. My mom used to laugh at me for my willingness to hang out with customers at the grocery, she'd have to drag me back over to her!!! lol Some things, I guess, never change!!! lol

@SquishyJackie ~ Ewww.. Seemingly Automated Invitations!! :( I feel you on that. And yes, your post made sense.. I feel sad, sometimes, about how impossibly far away some of the most interesting forum posters seem, and I don't think I'd want someone to message me to inform me of our geographical impossibility! lol Thanks for chiming in :)

Hi, @billiam ! Like @WriterGF mentioned, it WOULDN'T be fun to find a lot of rejections in your inbox. I like to ask questions here because I can get a "read" on the Collective Thought, because of the number of members who are active here. I can see where that would be a problem with the 16-to-1 ratio that I've seen reported on the membership here. Because I don't "force" my company on ANYONE, it just seemed like a good way for us to indicate our willingness to engage with others, if we so chose!

Very valid insights offered by all. These dark days give me plenty of time for introspection.. Just wondering... Thanks to all...

This seems unnecessarily complicated. This topic has come up in previous threads and I’ve never understood the concern that some have about others looking at their profiles.

If I want to initiate an interaction with someone, I’ll write them. I click on profiles all the time for a lot of reasons. They’re publicly on the internet and available for anyone to look at for whatever reason. I don’t assume that someone checking my profile indicates an interest in getting to know me.

Good point-- I've heard of many reasons why people decide to click through to check out profiles. Someone checking your profile in no way obligates her/him to make contact. That wasn't the point of this topic.

The point of this topic was to ask if it wouldn't be nice to have some way of signalling to others whether or not she/he would be open to further contact. No, no one is obligated to do so. It would just be nice if there were a way that those of us who would like to could make that openness known.

@WriterGF made an excellent point about unnecessary cruelty, about having one's inbox flooded with zeroes could cause a problem. <<<Still grateful for that insight.

It was just a question I wondered about. Thanks @TxD00d and @billiam for seeing this topic as SIMPLY a topic for fun discussion! Sheesh!!!

    Unnecessary

  • I like the idea of seeing yes's somehow. Similar to some dating apps where you can see if someone likes you. But if they implemented that, I think it'd would quickly become a pay-for service. Just like in the dating apps.

  • I'd just say Hi. You can't send a one letter message anyway. Probably has to be 4 characters

  • [Deleted User]justwanthugs (deleted user)

I click on profiles often based on where I’m traveling. However, the initial photo only lists the city, not the state. So, if I’m going to Portland, OR I might inadvertently click on someone in Portland, ME. It doesn’t bother me if someone visits and doesn’t say anything. I usually visit them back and either say hi or not. No harm done.

  • [Deleted User]Homesteader (deleted user)

This turned out really well! :) A reasoned, open discussion of an idea. Different viewpoints, a few solid insights, and a generally well rounded cybersation!

    @MatesCuddles ~ Noted.

@billiam ~ Hahaha! I do, too! But lest we dangerously blur the lines between the two, I'm leaving it be. Don't want ANYONE to mix us up with those apps/sites!!! Seriously!!

@ReltvlyCanshes ~ Now that, I did not know! "Hi" works until you're on the receiving end of "Buzz off, you ol' Biddy!" lolol JUST KIDDING!!!! (I crack myself up! lol) Good point about a simple, quick greeting, though..

@justwanthugs ~ Love the screen name! On another thread, we were laughing about how easy it was to hopefully click through to a profile showing a certain city, only to discover--as you said-- that the state was in another galaxy!! lol You've pretty much captured the consensus, though. Thanks for chiming in..

Back to the ol' drawing board! :)

  • Can't add any constructive feedback but I wouldn't mind this to be honest.
I had an idea once of just having a status bar at the top of the profile saying like 'actively looking' or something. Not sure if it's worth it though.

  • @DaveFromSussex Yes! I want a status bar sign that says “Approach with caution”, or “Bah Hugbug”. That would be fun to write your own in 35 characters or less and be able to change it. I also want a status bar sign that says “TL;DR” as a conversation starter so people would contact me about what was missed.

  • Would I receive a complimentary cuddle if I could figure out who left me the "1"?

    000000000000
    000000000000
    000000000000
    000000010000
    000000000000

  • [Deleted User]Homesteader (deleted user)

    @danimalcracker ~Noted.

@DaveFromSussex ~ Someone wrote me about how people can sometimes be sort of shy, not wishing to face rejection. That was sort of why I wondered about this. Your input IS constructive, though, and thanks for weighing in :) It just seemed like a way to send a pleasantly clear message that they were willing to interact. Honestly, I wouldn't mind it, either! :)

@TheFunCartel ~ Ahhhh... I see what you did there, "Bah HUGbug"!! <<Good one! I'd imagine that we could do our own version of a status bar sign, on our profiles, that would give visitors a heads up for what they could expect to get when interacting with us. I'll have to give this some thought!!

@TxTom ~ That cracked me up! lolol Someone's already sent me a 0, so it's already spreading!!! Wheeee!!! And yes, you shall receive a complimentary cuddle for figuring out who left you the 1-- IF you come to Ohio! lolol Or, of course, if you click through to see who sent it, like @justwanthugs suggested! lol

  • This sounds like an advertising ploy of sorts to me! Look at my profile or don't. Say "hi" or don't- Just be here for the right reasons. Personally, I've never thought to even look and see who's viewed my profile. Shoot me an message if you're interested in meeting up. I'm "good" either way! 🤷‍♀️

  • [Deleted User]Homesteader (deleted user)

@great_pillow08 ~ Ewwwww...Advertising!!! lol A lot of people don't bother with looking to see who might have viewed them, so I feel you on that point. In a sense, it doesn't really matter who viewed a profile if they didn't send a message, right? I and many others have chimed in to say how they view profiles for any number of reasons, whether or not they choose to send a message. Your take about being good either way, I have come to think, is probably the best policy!

Someone whose profile I've never visited chose to send me a "0"--- Um...Okay? lol Someone messaged me and told me that if I were to take off the "0" option, just leaving the positive 1, that it might be better. Had to agree with that because both @justwanthugs and @WriterGF made solid points about the effect the "0" might have and that, just maybe, it's okay to leave the system just the way it already is...

    Learning as we go...as always...
