A stranger becomes a friend through two basic processes: initial engagement and repeated contact. In order to make friends, you must enact both of these, and that means you must put yourself in situations where that is possible.

This is why I always recommend a pottery class. There you meet the same people each week, and will have plenty of opportunity to talk to them. It is essential that the activity you choose is both something that is interesting to you, and also likely to have a reasonable proportion of people likely to be willing to consider being your friend. Of course anybody can become friends with anybody, but you may wish to consider factors such as age, sex, income, etc.

Distance is a real obstacle, so keep it local.

Remember that you are not especially trying to become friends with somebody from the pottery class. You are there to enjoy learning pottery, and to extend the amount of social contact you have to give yourself a better chance of finding friends. The other participants' own social circles are the wider target.

Where I live the four primary sources of friends are: old pals from school or college; work colleagues; flatmates; and friends of friends.

Making friends is not intrinsically difficult. You just need to put the effort in. But there are many reasons why that might be difficult here, now or in general. Make sure you are fully aware of how your friend deficit happened. I believe the commonest reasons include being in new place or new circumstances; and poor emotional regulation.

Like most things, if you work hard and work smart some level of success is highly likely.

It's difficult to make friends once you are out of school. I had some very, very close friends through work, but once you are no longer in that job, they pretty much disappear. Most of my current friends are people I met in high school or college.
