Cuddling in Japan

I recently traveled to Japan and am planning future trips there, and unfortunately no one on this site comes up even if you search within a 300 mile radius of Tokyo. I’m surprised a site like CC isn’t killing it over there because of how lonely and isolated Japanese society is, but at the same time I know there are a lot of cuddle cafes (called soineya) you can go to but they’re not well advertised and can be hard to find especially if you’re a foreigner and you don’t understand Japanese.

Anyone have any experience doing cuddling sessions in Japan?

  • I know a lot about Japan, having lived there for a year. However, unfortunately I wouldn't know where to find those services in English because I was able to get myself around in Japanese. Sorry, I can't be of any help.

I can get around in Japanese as well. I know if you type 添い寝屋 in google, a number of sites come up for the cafes. Of course you have to have 上手な日本語 to read the sites, or website translator.

  • Are you learning right now? I can see you can even read Kanji.

  • Yes. Only N4 level pushing towards N3 though.

  • I would imagine there is a language barrier that prevents CC from gaining a foothold in non-english speaking countries.

  • I've never been to Japan, but want to go.

Perhaps the existence of these "soineya" is precisely why CC has no presence there.

Are "soineyas" mainstream? Or are they somewhat taboo?

I don’t know about soineyas but I know Maid Cafes/bars are definitely mainstream. You basically pay a floor fee which can be about 800 to 2500 yen ($6-17) per hour and you can order food and drinks but usually one of the maid girls will spend the entire hour talking to you, and it helps to know Japanese as the girls usually don’t know much English. Bar girls are also a thing and they usually stand out on the side of the road advertising to hang out and go drinking with you for 3000 yen/hr

  • There is all kinds of strange stuff in Japan that westerners are not aware of or invited into. I found the Japanese to be friendly and welcoming but they expect the Gaijin (foreigners) to stay on the tourist track and not try to truly engage with the complex Japanese culture. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a similar thing that you just won’t find it.

  • Reminds me of a time when I was in Osaka and I wandered off the tourist track and into an upscale bar. The hostess looked at me strangely but seated me at this luxurious looking bar. The men were dressed nicely and many had a beautiful woman on their lap. Then the hostess asked me to pay the entrance fee which was something like $1,200 USD. I wasn’t sure what I was going to get for $1,200 but I decided to leave. I assumed it was sex. But recently I met a Japanese man who explained it to me and he said that it wasn’t for sex but rather just for being able to talk to a beautiful woman and buy her drinks which would have costed another $200 apiece. So go figure. Don’t try too hard to understand Japanese culture. It simply won’t make any sense.

If you study Japanese and become very fluent as well as learn all the customs and etiquette, this is a hack override against the gaijin card. Not always, but it does go a long way.

Be careful of these places; a lot of them are run by yakuza.

Perhaps a 21-year old Hibiki Suntory Whisky?

  • I think the Yakuza are more afraid of Americans than the other way around.

  • If not the Yakuza, there are a lot of Nigerian gangs in Japan as well that run the bar front.

  • @dave31415 Ive been, got a cool nametag for the alcohol. The hostesses were very nice.

Had a really deep conversation about how they view that sort of thing versus the west. Its seen as normal according to them and a few guides/locals I talked to.

  • I live in Japan, and one the trend of cuddle cafes has come and passed. Second Cuddle Comfort actually geo blocks access from Japan. And while I could probably ask a mod to unblock Japan I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.

I know because I have to use a vpn to access the site, and cuddle comfort blocks most vpns as well.

  • I was just recently in Tokyo for about a week and was never able to access the site. But used it non-stop while in Seoul. I had a Korean SIM card so assumed that’s why?

We recently unblocked Japan as an experiment. But of the little I've read, I believe there's a particularly big cultural challenge for a western website/community to gain traction over there.

And I thought Japanese people don't like touching each other except for holding hands.

  • the trend of cuddle cafes has come and passed.

Can you still go to cuddle cafes though?

I think Japan needs CC more than any other country. Or at least a Japanese equivalent. I mean, maid cafes are super popular especially among salarymen. I figure if you know Japanese though that’s definitely a plus.

  • I was touched many times in Japan actually.

  • Well speaking of cafes, I had the fun experience of going to a host cafe in Seoul.
They’re in Japan also but didn’t go to one there. Well anyway it was a fun experience!
I had 2 cuddlers in Seoul reach out for a session but it didn’t feel right, I wasn’t in a cuddling mood there and couldn’t host.

  • I am fascinated by this thread.
