Happy 4th of July

[Deleted User]galowglass (deleted user)

Today I went to the 4th of July celebration, in the small community in which I grew up. I've done this every year of my life.
They have a parade, study-abroad groups that gather, families, the Ooompa Band in the old band shell, volleyball games, ... horseshoe pits and the clank of iron. The aroma of brats, burgers and charcoal is everywhere.
It was the first time I've gone, where I didn't recognize a single face! I feel old. But it was great to be back on old stomping grounds in any case.

Do you have any traditions or favorite things to do on the 4th?

Since this is an international website, it might not mean anything to some people. For those who don't know, it's Independence Day and a national holiday in the USA.

And from whom did we win our independence from ?? Well , the very nation our website owners call home .
It started with “ no taxation without representation”!! . And it went from there .
A war was fought . We won .
Now , they have schemed a way to get revenge .
Imagine , every time someone hugs someone in this country , 15% of that value is sent over there .
I say, .... “No commission without representation “, which means withhold payment until someone from over there comes in person , to collect . ?
Am I right ? Isn’t that fair and historically correct ?

  • My favorite tradition is folks get time off their jobs to come together and make some food :D

@cuddlerforu24 - hmmm interesting, a war fought over 'taxation without representation'. And yet as a permanent US resident but non-US citizen, I have to pay the same taxes as every other American but am not allowed to vote.

  • I do not work either of my jobs today and my son is at the lake with family so I have been so lazy and relaxed and it is oh so nice!! May get some takeout and a pedi (yes I said it)

  • Uk... sorry but probably the reason is every four years we have an election ,so , to keep the election results , fair to US citizens , only those are qualified , for voting . Imagine a foreign country sending a population , registering as permanent residents ,every forth November over here to vote , then moving back to home .

We would love to have you as a citizen .

  • Considering how the electoral college works it doesn't matter how many people or who votes anyway, that's not really how the prez is elected here.

  • I have no problem with not being able to vote, but if I can't, I shouldn't have to pay federal taxes. After all, that's what the War of Independence was fought over.

  • Felons cant vote either, or anybody under the age of 18. Not making the comparison of course but just saying, there are other people who cant vote so should they also not have to pay the feds?

I am part of the crowd gathered to celebrate Independence Day. Can anyone locate me where I am standing? ;)

  • Happy Fourth!

I can't remember the last time I legitimately celebrated this holiday. Hell, I can't remember the last time I legitimately celebrated any holiday... nurses don't really have holidays unless they work in clinics or somewhere else that insists on shutting down and giving people that time. I hope you all have a wonderful evening. <3 :)

Uk... pretty sure the original complaint was a sales tax on tobacco , not any federal income taxes to a govt.
And if you smoke , you should be able to deduct the sales tax you pay on tobacco, an itemized deduction on schedule A

For help you can call the irs , or hire a tax consultant

Edit , your tax dollars can buy you legal protection in our system , even if you are not a citizen . Watch “ Bridge of Spies” movie

@pmvines - you bring up an interesting point. I just did a little research. Almost 6 MILLION adult US citizens have restricted voting rights. The laws vary state by state but some states permanently ban felons from voting (e.g. Florida).

  • Yup, we do like to impose sanctions on our people, both citizens on non

  • @choicesvital I'm guessing you're 'round about here ...
