Alien Romulus is now out on Hulu, and to my surprise on Disney+ - was a bit unhappy to see it there, as it's definitely NOT something that I'd want my child or any of the nieces or nephews to try watching. While I sometimes question the "family friendliness" of some Disney+ choices, a gory, violent "R" rated movie should be a no-brainer.
Anyways, it was boring, and some of the franchise elements were completely out of whack. In most other Alien movies, it takes some time for the facehugger to do it's thang, and then it takes more time for the chestburster to make that bone-crunching, messy exit. But in this movie, the elapsed movie time (not screentime, but time for the characters) from face grab to chest burst was perhaps 10-15 minutes. That really pulled me out of the movie.
By now, the pattern of Alien movies is to have the lead heroine, usually as the lone human survivor, defeat the monster at the end. It would be nice to see a different ending, like several characters make it through, or maybe, just once, the monsters could win. Also would have been nice to have a larger cast to start with, just to give the audience hope that more than one would survive. (yes, I know Ripley died at the end of Alien 3, and several made it out on Alien Resurrection)
Now, on the coolness side, the writers beat the hell out of poor Kay. Rarely have I seen a movie character have just about every imaginable horror piled on like that poor woman had to endure. The new monster was also really creative and very disturbing. I also liked the use of the Ash series android for continuity.
But overall, the movie was mostly boring.
