I didn’t really watch the halftime, listened while doing other things. What’s the outrage?
Tbh I'm not sure why so many are so upset. Maybe cuz it was different and they didn't understand the genre? I didn't catch the show and I've never listened to Kendrick Lamars music. So I can only think of one reason. One I will not say out loud. But I hear there was a lot of nuance and messages in his show
@CaramelNotes I’m not a fan of rap/hip hop.. At least not the last 10 years of it. Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Snoop in 2022 halftime was fun and entertaining. This years was just boring. Lamar isn’t popular enough to headline all by himself. I’m sure a good portion of the audience didn’t know who he was. The only good part was him dissing Drake. They should have had Lil Wayne if anything… he from New Orleans
The show was bad, to you. You're not a fan of rap/hip hop but many are. All art isn't entertaining. He is a Pulitzer Prize winning artist that brought a deep message. If you didn't enjoy it or understand it, maybe you weren't the target audience.

As a hip hop fan who respects the hell out of Kendrick and appreciated his show, I will say that for myself personally I feel like it was a bit thin sound wise and the production seemed almost unfinished in a way. Also not sure how I feel about a song with a dis to another artist being played during Superbowl (even though I do like the track and share his enthusiasm with not caring for Drake)
Samuel Jackson as Uncle Sam was genius though
@CaramelNotes, no it was a bad show. I have never heard of the artist and have no views on him, his music or his message because I don't know what they are. I did try to listen, but like all rappers he chooses to sing in a way that makes it nearly impossible to understand what he's saying.
The show was an embarrassment to all concerned. It looked as if it was designed by somebody who never even been to a football stadium, never mind seen a halftime show in one. The TV direction was woeful: I mean not even student standard. The choreography was somewhere between woeful and non-existent. The costumes were not consistent. The use of colour, shade, depth, light and pattern was non-existent. The whole thing looked like the finale of a routine Saturday night TV music show when somebody realised at Friday lunchtime that they'd forgotten to create a finale for tomorrow's show. Most of the time allocated to the show seemed to have been taken up with building and removing a pointles and boring set that was very clearly designed for something else and was being reused.
If that's indeed what happened, then I will cheerfully award 6/10 and say not bad. If the intent was to bring a serious or deep message, then the score is a resounding 0/10 because it failed totally on every level.
It's true I'm not a hip-hop fan and not the core audience for such a thing, but that's fair enough and I don't mind that. In fact I'm in favour of it, I like to broaden my horizons. I wouldn't expect to get much actual enjoyment from the superbowl half time show, it's just unlikely to be my kind of thing. But to create a half-time show that is not squarely targetted, in some sense, at the people watching the game .... that is a deliberate insult.
The song, and the artist, may be deserving of the very highest respect. The show was a disgrace.
Again, I don't know the story but if I am to understand correctly that the lyrics were consciously disrespectful to another artist ..... to perform such a song on this occasion is a truly despicable thing to do.
@CaramelNotes Don't mind him, he is being dramatic. It wasn't the best halftime show of all time but not bad for a single performer not relying on other artists to boost his performance
I dunno… if you get the majority of the live crowd at the Super Bowl to unconsciously hit the harmony on your smack down line in the diss chorus, and then that crowd explodes in “Oooooh”, “Oh!”, laughter, and then applause for that moment, you had a pretty damn good show.
If you also drop your message of resistance and call for rebellion against the ruling Reich right in front Twitler who is THERE, that earns my respect.
Besides, having Samuel Jackson be Uncle Sam is pure fire.
