The deflection was, when talking about one particular subject, generalizing to make them just like all the others. A combination of a false equivalence and a whatabout.
In fairness, though, they did discount the equivalence.

The BBC's Charter paragraph 3(1) states:
The BBC must be independent in all matters concerning the fulfilment of its Mission and the promotion of the Public Purposes, particularly as regards editorial and creative decisions, the times and manner in which its output and services are supplied, and in the management of its affairs.
Paragraph 6 states:
The Public Purposes of the BBC are as follows. (1) To provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them:
The BBC is funded primarily by the television licence fee. Nobody is obliged to pay the licence fee if they don't want to, although in the UK you do have to pay it if you want to watch BBC television.
