Speaking of Nurture & Nature

I think we all know that both play a role in the development of a child, but which one do you think holds more weight? Can instinctive naturistic tendencies be nurtured away or will nurturing tendencies eventually be overrun by nature?

Well if you think about it in terms of animals. You can never fully tame or fully domesticate a wild animal, regardless of how you raise them. I feel we are advanced but still not a whole lot different when it comes to this. Our nature will usually win in the end regardless of how we are nurtured.

Biology tends to kick morality’s butt.

Especially when we try to deny our biology.

Combination of both, not just one or the other. Many influences.

  • Instinctive natural tendencies can be overridden by nurture, but it's a thin veneer in some cases. It's very dependent on the individual - some people are wild animals who are barely kept in check by societal rules, others are so domesticated that they couldn't function or survive without all the artificial rules imposed by society.

  • Our childhood experiences have an insane impact on our thought process, worldview, and actions. So I would say Nurture is more powerful.

Especially the lack of it, or worse, the opposite of it. Neglect and abuse don't simply leave us to our instinctive nature...they can twist us into pretzels who commit obscene cruelties on ourselves, let alone others.

Research feral children. They are often fearful and curious, like a wild animal...not cruel and violent, like the "animalistic side" we talk about having, "instinctively".

    Very fascinating subject, for sure.

  • I believe that's entirely situational. A nurture or nature situation can have equal or fluctuating influence/weight on a child in an infinite amount of ways. For some their upbringing outweighs the opportunities given, in some they were able to overcome their nurture with their own willpower. It's just depends on so much.

I suppose the short answer is what holds more weight? Well, whichever was the heaviest to carry.

  • The whole spiritual quest is to align both. Make nurture into all nature. Tuning in to the body without reaction is the highest path for that
