Shitterton is a small hamlet in Dorset, England, known for its unusual name. It is part of the village of Bere Regis and has a history dating back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086. The name "Shitterton" comes from Old English, meaning "the farmstead by the stream used as an open sewer"—a rather unflattering but historically accurate reference to its past.
The hamlet gained some fame in recent years because its road sign was frequently stolen, likely due to its humorous name. To prevent further theft, the residents took matters into their own hands and installed a 1.5-tonne stone sign engraved with "Shitterton"—making it much harder for pranksters to steal.
