I’m currently learning Japanese and have been for a little over two years now. Learned French in high school and also studied a little bit of Spanish.

I’d love to learn Spanish, what have you found to be the most effective way to learn a new language and what sort of timeframe until you could at least have basic conversations?
I have English, French and Spanish. Now working on Mandarin. I figure once that’s added, I can talk to about half the world population. 🙂

Started Mandarin but switched to French.
I understand about 50% of fluent Spanish conversations and some Italian. My best friend is teaching me Mandarin & Chinese. Learning Arabic as well!
Did German at school but forgot most of it haha...thinking about relearning at some point.

I’m having a fantastic time learning to communicate with Canadians and Australians.
Some new words, many of the same words, different pronunciations, different meanings. Very challenging and rewarding.
If I hadn’t already learned how to communicate with the English I’m sure it would take a lot longer.
Good thing so many people already speak American.

For those of you that are literal minded, my words above are only partly in jest.
I have more success being crystal clear sometimes with Spanish speakers than English speakers because, I think, people take the language for granted and are not attaching the same meanings to the words.
@lovingspoonfull You joke about that (and for the record, I thought it was funny), but sometimes learning dialects of the same language can sometimes be just as hard as learning a completely new language. 😅

I’ve been fortunate to speak Spanish with primarily Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans. It’s an eye opener. Many distinctives. Especially slang.
I had difficulty communicating with Spanish and Peruvians.
I've been learning Spanish for about a year, and working on my reading comprehension for German and Latin. I don't speak German very well, but I can read it with some faculty. I got into German and Latin in college years ago when I became interested in Classics.
It has remained a lifelong hobby that always is on a slow simmer in the background of my various interests.
