There's not enough control in the world to control your way to safety.
To me, being free is a mindset and an energy of taking responsibility for my happiness and understanding that obstacles and restrictions and laws don't make me less free.... They make things interesting.
There aren't infinite paths that are available to me at any given time, but there's a smaller subset of infinite paths that are.

Freedom mostly pertains to choice but what is more important are rights. Rights protect freedoms and general well being. You may be free to choose a doctor or health plan but you are still confined to certain conditions. If you work a 9-5 job are you truly free? People still have to comply with economic conditions and acceptable social practices within the law or workplace to survive.
Real freedom is being able to go to a restaurant and not worry about how much it cost. Everything else is bullshit.

Self control creates the environment for freedom Control over one's self IMO requires an understanding that without self control, freedom cannot exist. So there needs to be a prime directive for civilized interaction. I'm writing a paper..or a book on UTOPIA, managed by artificial intelligence. Not our current electric computer based intelligence but binary automata cogs and cams.

This story asks the questions that we as humans will eventually face. Am I capable of self control? Do I need a higher intelligence to help preserve society? We base a lot of our actions on feelings. (We need them to create) however without self accountability, tempered by an introspective reflective position, we will only do what feels good in the moment. We may not face our issues at the expense of our goal. If UTOPIA does exist, it is buried deep in the introspective mind. But can it be shared?
Sherlock Holmes (and Watson) travel to a far away place to face these questions at the hands of an Automaton, in the setting of UTOPIA. Can a robot fully understand what is best for the human race?

Personally, I believe Utopia is impossible, as it can only exist when imposed by force---which then negates it's status as a utopia.
A long time ago in a thread far, far away I asked a User about how his vision of Utopia would work given the absence of a profit motive. It really irked him that I would ask that, and I never received an answer.
Nevertheless, I would be very interested in reading your paper/book upon it's publishing. Perhaps you could provide a link or something when it's completed.
@Dance_Culture Prospective students at my school used to have to write an essay on "the wise restraints that make men free." Sadly, if I did this it was so long ago that I can't remember anything about it.
It does also make me think of "your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins". It seems like the same thing said from a different direction.

@IronLemon I was just thinking about the swinging fist and nose quote yesterday as well after reading and thinking about this thread.
Also was thinking how birds are viewed as being so free, but are they free if they need somewhere to perch and come home to? What if there were no trees or anywhere for them to perch and had to be always flying around? Would that be freedom or would they be bound to fly until dying from exhaustion or being eaten by a predator due to having nowhere safe and secure to stay?

@gem7 You had it right in the first post. If you do not have security nationally then someone else can impose restrictions on your freedom. Otherwise, we would still have tea time instead of tee time. And I have the freedom now to hate both times because our security was secured nearly 250 years ago.
