Interesting that I'm somehow getting new visitors even though my profile is muted and I'm fairly certain it's not coming from the forums
Being muted means you don't show in searches and people can't message you but they can still view your profile and just because someone doesn't comment on forums doesn't mean they aren't scrolling. So if you're posting people can see you and still view your profile through that.
If you have left karmas for anyone, people seeing those karmas will click on your profile.

Yes, anyone can visit your profile. They just won't see you in a search. I'm sure there are plenty of people who visit the forums without ever posting here.
I believe it just means you don’t pop up like when someone is searching….

Deactivating is what makes it so people cannot view your profile (since your account if offline), not muting.
They're interested in someone you met with. Just happened to me this past week. I'm wondering why men from LA are looking at me (I'm in DC), then low and behold I discover that a woman I recently met with is in LA right now. I just put two and two together.
