Speak your language

edited April 2025 in General

Would love to see something in your native or second (or third fourth and fifth) language. It's all about educating, so please provide an English translation so others can read what you share ๐Ÿ˜Š

My son's mother was from South Africa. We met on a bus in Belgium when I was 21.while I was hitchhiking around Europe and the UK. There are multiple languages spoken in South Africa, one major one being Afrikaans. I picked up a little bit from her, and got to put the little bit I knew to use when we were in her hometown of Capetown. It is an interesting language, loved to hear the townspeople speak it. Very similar to Dutch.

Hallo my vriend, pragtige dag vandag! Hoe gaan dit?

Hello my friend, beautiful day! How are you doing ?

I was a fluent Spanish speaker when I was youngerโ€ฆIโ€™ve lost a lot living in Virginia. Maybe if theyโ€™d taught me more useful phrases than:

Mi tocadisco es descompuesto. (My record player is broken) OR

Que Lastima! Dos mujeres in la cocina! (What a shame! Two women in the kitchen!)

My favorite phrase ever though as a hopeless romantic: Mi corazon te siempre recuerda. (My heart always remembers you)

  • I feel like I can understand and speak enough Spanish for very basic things, it's just the writing it part that gets me. Can't spell in Spanish to save my life

  • Thanks P! I too belive in free speech even on CC
. Unfortunately all I know is nerd, specifically mtg speak.

Also been reading a few Lobo comic books too!

    Interlac with English translations.

"Frag ka." -> "Die it is."

"Ka ree? Keezy fem frag Hahn Sho Lobo? Ka ree?"

-> "Seriously? This little girl thinks she can take down the Main Man?"

"Keezy fem..." -> "Little girl..." (Note, huge insult in Interlac)

Lol! It wasn't hard to figure out what "Keezy fem" means. ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

  • My web browser has Google Translate built in so it's not hard to understand the message no matter the language it was written in.

For whatever reason I think korean would be the better language to learn. Would love to buy one of those abandoned houses in japan though!

edit: better only in modern relevance, seems like younger generation is experiencing a 'korean invasion' of music, tv shows etc. been meeting up with quite a few korean women too, also my sons best friend is an expat living in korea.
