Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
I say that a lot also.

  • Had an elderly relative who used to always say to me "Be good. And if you can't be good, then BE CAREFUL."

  • Look up the resale price of diamonds.

It's quite a lot less than you were expecting.

    No, less than that.

Why yes, the diamond industry does have a lot of gems in storage and restricts the supply to keep the retail price high, why do you ask?

In the end of the day, when all is said and done, I don't approve of hope. It does only harm. It is an emotion for losers on the path to losing, propagated by the worthless in the hope (ha ha) of disguising their worthlessness.

I speak as one who, more than once, in the most serious of circumstances, has had 'nothing but hope'. Bullshit. Hope is nothing but a milestone round your neck, in disguise. It's nearly killed me more than once, and I don't mean that as an expression.

If you think hope is good, you've never been in the shit. You may think you have, but you're wrong. When you have a few seconds to live - maybe - or even a few hours, hope is the enemy. Your friends are imagination, effort, a healthy disrespect for probability, and positive fatalism. Self-confidence or lack thereof, a useful charlatan at the best of times, is irrelevant.

  • Well, hope is a great state of mind for me, personally. It’s what keeps me going.
    I can’t speak for others.
Assumptions about strangers will sometimes be proven wrong.
I know you’ve been through a lot @CuddleDuncan I wish the best for you. πŸ€—

  • Look before you leap but he who hesitates is lost

  • @g_w_t_w as you correctly observed I'm not having a go at you or anybody else. Thank you for your kind words, they mean more than you might think. πŸ«‚ And you know that I wish the best for you too.

I am relentlessly positive, even while I was falling off a cliff in Bolivia. I do remember thinking, as I started to fall, "Now this IS a tricky one." (Spoiler alert: I didn't die.) But positivity and hope are not the same thing.

Insofar as hope was relevant that day it was the fast track to death, and I survived partly because of the friends described above and partly from having nothing better to do except the whole dying thing, which very much looked like it was going to hurt A LOT. Perhaps it was cowardice that helped me hang on to the bush that I was swinging from, like Indiana Jones. It was guts and bloody-mindedness that got me back up to the top. And luck, mostly luck that the bush held.

I am aware that hope brings a lot of, well, hope to a lot of people, and I went through it myself. I am willing to accept that it can be a helpful stage (although it wasn't for me) but please don't get stuck there forever. You are capable of more than you think; nearly everybody, other than deluded arseholes, is capable of more than they think. I saw this time and time again as a tutor, when students said, 'But I can't do that' and then 'Oh' after I'd made them do it successfully. All ages, all abilities. One of the great privileges of being a tutor is watching somebody think, "Everything I believe about myself .... might be wrong."

I have stage 4 cancer and although I'm technically cancer-free right now, my long term odds are no better than 50-50. Well actually that's not true, my long term odds are zero, the same as everybody's. I survive on determination driven by frustration.

My only 'hope' is that there will be a knock on my bedroom door and it will be Miss World, saying, "Duncan, I've been watching you from afar and ..... well, is there any chance, any chance at all of a shag? I've got lots of cash if it helps, and my twin sister is in the car outside."

I did actually meet - and I'm not making this up - a recent Miss [major Latin American country] on a peculiar dating website and we had a good chat which, sadly, never came to anything.

People say you make your own luck. They are morons, obviously, because luck is that thing over which you have no influence by definition. But if you want a sniff of dating Miss Way Out Of My League .... you gotta be on the right website. If you want to survive falling off a cliff you gotta be thinking, 'Well this death thing is all very well, but what if there was a way to not die?' Hope not only stultifies that kind of thought process, but it comes laden with negativity and disappointment when it doesn't deliver. There is nothing more depressing than hope.

So if you are surviving on the hope that one day things will be better .... well first of all, well done! You're doing brilliantly. You must be to have got this far into this post. πŸ™„ Secondly, yes they will be because everything is temporary. They may or may not get worse first but they can't actually go down for ever, that's not a Thing. They have to get better at some point because ... well technically it's entropy but I'm not getting into that now. In other words you don't need to hope thay things will get better: under the laws of physics it's a necessity, even though it may not feel like that right now. And it might take a while. And they might not get better in exactly the way you were 'hoping'. Half the battle is recognising the improvement, which may be little more than an opportunity.

Thirdly, see above: when the moment comes you can do a lot better than mere hope. If you're not sure what to do then slightly improve your general education and social life/skills.

Thanks for explaining and I get it. What you’re dealing with takes such strength. Hope has to be part of it? I feel hopeless off and on but then a cup of espresso sometimes helps. πŸ€—
