When you can't sleep

Just curious what everyone does when they find it hard to sleep.

Typically when I can't sleep, its due to something weighing on my mind and I find having the ability to talk with someone helps relieve it. Unfortunately, there isn't typically someone available to talk with when you find yourself awake in the middle of the night, unable to sleep and wanting to talk.... the irony of it.

  • Yeah that’s such a bummer when waking up in middle of night 😞. Once that happens I’m up rest of night !
However since I joined team indica gummies it doesn’t happen hardly 😇 super stay asleep time 💤💤💤

  • @OhioMike I have tried gummies, they did nothing for me. glad it helps you though.

  • @MJ73 did you know what strain they were.? For me the Sativa and even the hybrids don’t agree with me. But I’m all good with the indica ones 🤗

  • @OhioMike I don't recall, but fairly sure they weren't Indica.
Perhaps I will look into them again.

  • @MJ73 have you tried journaling out your thoughts?

  • @disneysamurai yes, that does help at times too.

  • @MJ73 i also started playing brown noise on my phone - you can look up on YouTube. Credit to @RedFox16 for introducing me to this

I've found lately that listening to the recorded sound of a thundery rainstorm helps me to switch off a bit, There's lots to choose from on youtube, I usually go for one with a black screen & no ads.

  • I used to have horrible insomnia! I do lots of things, but I think the most helpful is Progressive Muscle Relaxation. Basically you start at your feet and you tense small groups of muscles as hard as you can for a breath, like curling your toes. Then you exhale and relax them completely, and move up to your calves, thighs, etc. Eventually you get to your head, and then you take a few minutes to breathe and check in with you body and relax any areas still holding tension.

You are focused on your breathing and your body and I usually find I am asleep before I get to scrunching up my eyebrows 😂

I'm sure there are lots of videos and audio to talk you through it. But I have even done this strategy with kids and it works pretty well!

  • I listen to a sleep meditation on YouTube.

  • Bilateral music, EMDR helps me fall asleep. I set a sleep timer. I like this creator because there's no ads.

It might be good for cuddling too. Although I don't want to fall asleep during a cuddle session. I like to be awake & engaged with my partner. 🫠

  • Thank you, All... some great suggestions and thoughts.

  • I can fall asleep but can’t stay asleep.
I’ve tried everything from YouTube, Spotify, medications, gummies, CBD, wine. I don’t have caffeine after noon.
I only sleep in 2-3 hour segments. I would love any new recommendations, but not sure what else there is. I have to be careful about anything that would cause cognitive decline because of age. Well, we all should be careful of that probably!

When I started getting severe insomnia I tried loads of things but my spinning mind was louder than all of them.

What ended up working was putting my iPad near my bed playing something familiar. A comedy. A science lecture. Something that if I heard certain parts of it, it would grab my attention but did not contain new information that would completely steal my focus.

I’d play that at a volume that I couldn’t hear if I was shuffling around or rolling over. So very very quiet.

This had the effect of interrupting my thought spirals when they took off and encouraging a bed time pattern of calming down and getting still.

This does have some current drawbacks. YouTube ads are very long and very loud now compared to other content. I’ve woken up to 90 minute ads of high pitched screaming in another language utterly confused before…. And October is the worst for this.

  • Call the warmline it's open 24 hrs

  • I listen to reruns of "lawtube" streams.

  • @Rocket_Man... the warmline? not familiar with that.

  • I had a period of severe insomnia and the only thing that helped was getting prescribed antidepressants 😑

  • Theraflu and melatonin

  • @g_w_t_w Something that has helped me sleep better is taping my mouth at night. I just use athletic tape and place it vertically. It is simple and inexpensive. It may feel a little odd the first night, so I recommend trying it for three.

  • @Erin_Elle_ do you do that every night? How did you discover this worked for you?

  • How did you discover this worked for you?

She was probably a hostage at one time and this is more sanitary than a gag.

  • @Erin_Elle_
I will try it! I’m also wondering how you thought to try this!

  • @Elrondish Not every night anymore, but I did it consistently for a while when I was teaching myself to sleep with my mouth closed. I first heard about it from my coach and what can I say, I love a good weird health experiment. It totally changed my sleep. Everyone try it for the next three nights and report back. 😁

  • I sometimes make a cop of hot chocolate with honey. Also I take an Advil PM really helps, it takes about 30 minutes to kick in.

  • @Erin_Elle_ I already sleep with my mouth closed. fact is, when my sinuses are clogged I can't sleep at all because I find it near impossible to breathe through my mouth.
I also can't snorkel or use scuba gear.

Yes, I realize that may make me odd.

  • At the very least I can see the tape being a wonderful depilatory.

    I watch French detective shows.

  • My ears constantly ring so I have to have something on to drown it out otherwise I'll wanna stick a hammer in my own
