Nintendo is re-releasimg Virtual Boy games on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 and requires this $100 accessory to play them. I had to check the calender to make sure it wasn't April 1st.
lol I saw that. Cannot imagine why.
I remember trying one at target when I was a kid. That red burned my retinas.
I remember they had a virtual boy at the electronic section of my local Sears for customers to play and one time someone put mace around the eye pieces.
well Nintendo has always liked experimenting with peripherals. every so often they try new things. most people don't embrace them as they are often clunky and not efficient to use.
but they also don't make a good voice chat platform. they have 9ne in the mobile app for certain games. we tried it back during acnh during lockdowns. and we just went back to using discord
@graceangel the switch 2 remedies the voice chat stuff. I think they've avoided incorporating stuff like that, because they felt most of their audience were children. switch 2 getting more adult titles.
virtual boy was the rare nintendo pure failure. it was so awful that it was scrapped super early in its life cycle. very few games came out for it... BUT by revisiting it, they can make new games with better gfx and full color, who knows. maybe they have a vision to resurrect this terrible idea.
@wilderdude - Nintendo has been way more relaxed on the type of games they allow. There is literally Hentai content on the original Switch. Sony censors their content more.
@Mike403 maybe it was under the radar to me, i remember a time (maybe DS days?) where they were super strict.
@wilderdude - They were. They used to even censor the blood in games like Mortal Kombat on the SNES. They don't censor much anymore. As long as the content isn't straight up porn, they allow whatever.
They had porn games on the original NES.
@disneysamurai - Not licensed by Nintendo. Companies were able to defeat the NES lockout chip and Nintendo actually went after retailers threatened to cut off their supply of official NES products if they were caught selling unlicensed games.
I freakin love the virtual boy. I would rent it as a kid and when it failed spectacularly I snagged one for $20 from Electronics Boutique. I have modded mine to fix the lens issue and have a rechargeable battery for it, as well as a flash cart with e-ink screen (despite also owning almost every game except Jack Bros cause it’s so pricey. I also have it emulating on my Quest 3.
Needless to say, I am beyond stoked to get that accessory. I don’t care that I have the real thing, I need it! I may be one of like 5 people in the world that love the Virtual Boy but I don’t care haha
The lockout chip communicates with a similar chip on the NES cartridge. If it fails to communicate with each other, it causes the NES to constantly reset. That's the blinking power light some of you may remember.
@CharlieBear lol i will probalby buy it as well, just for the novelty of it.
@wilderdude - I never bought that heck of crap when it came out and I'm certainly not going to buy it now.
@Mike403 yeah totally get that. lol. i'll buy it as a toy and if nintendo doesn't do more with it it can be something my old self can demonstrate to my grandkids about what garbage we had when i was a kid.
How great did it feel, being 7-8 years old and firing up Metroid on the nes. To this day the main stage music is so soothing.
well already on the switch, if you have the online membership get virtual c9nsoles. maybe the virtual boy is for people who only play those.
I haven't bought a switch 2 yet. it's kinda down the chain in big things we need atm.. probably I'd get it for my son, and I'll stick with my regular switch since I don't use it heavily. I'm more of a pc gamer these days.
@CharlieBear - same. I was about 16 and scored a discounted one on close out. I liked playing it. Probably should have kept it.
Not sure if I would like it less now that I wear glasses.
