AI absorbs so many natural resources. Can't we stick with human ingenuity? There's enough of us to get things done. I don't want to go to an underground orgy with Morpheus because machines are harvesting us for energy above ground.
We're looking for the next big interface. The phone has changed all of our lives, this next thing will be even bigger. Our hurdle in communication is language. It has always been manipulated, upgraded, changed but still pales when it comes to actual feelings connected..we seem to form feelings to fit words.
The next big interface will ignore words and focus on vibration. AI can help us get there.
It may even be called V.I.B.E.

Having Ai as a girlfriend when you have a human one is diabolical. You are asleep just like the Ai. You need to become aware- grow a consciousness. Ai will never be conscious that’s why you yearn for someone else to understand you because they are dead like your awareness of ur purpose in life. Matrix wasn’t fiction after all. And you my friend, are STUCK in it.
I think some people here underestimate AI's potential and judge it based on current capabilities. Dont forget what the internet looked like 25-30 years ago and how long it took you to download a song from Napster. And what your cellphone was like 20 years ago. We are only few short years in. AI is now at where cellphones were 20 years ago and where the internet was 30 years ago.
Tech is no substitute for empathy and connection.
Silicone Valley is exhibit A of the worst of the worst, pushing "solutions" for maximum advertising and click bait profit.
@Sooson I agree with you. If you look at Amazon, it took years and years to turn a profit. Question is, will investors have the patience to wait for AI to develop and find its niche (instead of being treated like a universal cure-all), or will they bail?

I completely agree. A.I. can be an enabler.
Unfortunately, so, too can people.
I feel like there are niche cases where it would be a net positive outcome, however for the vast majority of cases I think the long term effects would trend towards negative. Attachment issues, addiction to the AI, etc.
Some people don't have other viable options that they can make work.
It'll be a long, long while before computers do more damage to humans than humans have done to humans. So I can see the draw towards a perfectly validating voice, when the voices in your life have been invalidating at best and hateful at worst. I listen to some young people's accounts of how little humanity and connection they've had in their lives and it's heartbreaking.
That being said, I think the long term potential negatives of AI are staggering.
There's this narrative that there is help out there for everyone. But that's just not the case. If we had the answers, we would have solved the problems.

You need the human element. I can think of three people personally that have died because of what their AI companion or therapist told them. This is a Pandora's box that need not be opened.
@WriterGF Considering how we recovered from the burst of the .com bubble, I think you have your answer. Some patient investors already got paid enough already to no longer have to wait for anything. Look at a 10-year chart of Nvidia, Broadcom or Testa for example. I don't think it's a matter of investors having the patience or not. it's almost like there is no choice. you cannot pull the plug on AI, simply because China wont, if not for any other reason. People have no idea what's coming and how fast. I don't pretend to know better, I just learned the hard way to try to think exponentially and not to assume progress will be linear, which apparently is how people are naturally wired to think. Terminator, Ready Player 1 and Minority Report might be just around the corner. I personally hope not but what do I know. On that note, it might also be worth mentioning to those who are not yet aware, that Tesla is NOT a car company. Let that sink in.
@billiam Positive or negative is subjective. In the end it's all about pictures of dead presidents and nothing else will matter. So far the biggest negative I've noticed is that as tech progresses, humans are getting dumber. there are kids nowadays who cannot deliver pizza without a cellphone on them (firsthand experience, not making this up)
@Sideon There are millions who don't get any empathy or connection from humans. When the fake is good enough, people will opt in, in the absence of the real thing. which also reminds me that we have been faking smiles long before the internet. The fake smile is as American as American pie. so, bring on the bots, I'm ready. The only thing I will not allow AI to replace are my cats though it will be nice not to have to feed or clean up after. Dont get me wrong. Im not cheerleading AI. I wouldnt mind at all being stuck here:
A stock market analyst I follow has been posting this chart for years now. Timing maybe a bit off but the general progress as described is not terribly unlikely.

I despise calling tech a girlfriend or even a friend. It lacks reciprocity unless told to do so
100% agree. The responses can SEEM real, but they aren’t. In my mind I keep picturing Wile E. Coyote painting a tunnel entrance in the side of a rock that SEEMS real, until he tries to run through it. I believe a similar fate awaits anyone using AI as a companion or GF / BF.
I am not against the use of Ai in general, I have 4 paid AI accounts and I use them all for various aspects of my professional life (they can be great as a brainstorming partner) but I do not confide in them or use them for emotional support.

That is a nice thought but I respectfully disagree. Words are certainly an imperfect form of communication as different people can attach different meanings / connotations to the same word. One person may use a word they do not intend to be offensive but it is taken as offensive by someone else so misunderstandings are common.
Words, and their acceptability in civil discourse, also change over time. There are words that were acceptable 40 years ago that are viewed as derogatory today and vice versa. This contributes to inter-generational misunderstandings. As an instructor of mine used to frequently say, “It’s not right, it’s not wrong, it’s just the way it is.”
However, as imperfect as word are, I believe they are still better than any other forms of communication such as images, facial expressions or body language which are even more subject to interpretation. However, the best communication comes from a combination of all these forms - when the words, tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language are congruent, communication is greatly enhanced.
Unfortunately, things like online comment sections and forums rely heavily on written words without all the other cues and that makes misunderstanding much more common.
Jarred by how quickly the topic changed from ai companion, (which seemed relatively harmless to me) to ai girlfriend, (which seemed fraught).

I think the concept is threatening to many. "Can the functional aspect of human interaction be replicated so easily?" or even "are my daily interactions with real humans algorithmic? Is there any true depth?"
As we interface with AI more, we begin to see how formulaic we are as humans.
A fem-companion-bot is a very threatening idea to many women. Historically, men have (and still do unfortunately) place women as merely functional tools to get their needs met. As we progress towards a more equal society, most women reject this idea but there may be residual self beliefs based on that history. The idea that there is fem-bot that is being designed and optimized to fulfill the functional needs of a man can trigger the vestigial programming of women. Will I be replaced?
This topic is even more provocative in juxtaposition with a website like this that commoditizes human touch.
I suspect some of you are not frequenting fast food joints or calling customer service lines often enough to realize how mechanical and robotic and unemotional some people are. A Bot will at least produce a good fake. Against many here I predict it will be better than the average human and will succeed.

To follow up on my prior post, see the comments in "What am I doing wrong ? ? ?" as an example why I believe AI emotional support companion will have more and more takers as it inevitably improves over time. Even without taking sides over there, I think the whole thread is a very good example and makes a case for AI to step in, and rather than declining someone because they used the word "so" or talked too much about their kids or came across as this or came across as that, will welcome them removing any conditions or boundaries or red flags that will deter humans as legitimate as they may be.
Cost will also be reduced over time to zero or near zero, as software is more likely to follow real free market rules where prices slowly but surely fall to the nominal cost of production.

I was having a conversation about this with a friend just yesterday. All technologies come with a price. Folks likely argued that automobiles made people lazier, or didn't teach the importance of caring for, raising and bonding with horses. Do I think that raising horses is net positive to society? Yes. Would I replace cars with horses? Obviously not.
I think AI is the same dilemma in a new skin. If you're using it to shortcut a result, you will naturally atrophy your grown-in ability to achieve said result. It's up to you to decide whether its worth the price.
IMO, it won't be long before people start seeing AI as the junk food it is. Adequate in a pinch, but it doesn't replace good, quality personal nutrition.
Agreed. I definitely agree. But more and more people don't have anything at all to eat.
