Ending Toxic Connections before 2026

edited November 2025 in General

Feeling a bit sad recently, I had to end 3 friendships just 2 months before 2026, I thought they would make but it got to the point my self worth and self evaluation came into crosswords with a friends disrespect and toxicity and I was forced to make the difficult decisions to let 3 friends go that I known for 4years.

they were all separate scenarios but the common denominator was me trying to keep dealing with the verbal abuse for the entire year of 2025 because I kept letting things slide to keep the peace and thought maybe they didn't mean to do x or say x. But when X kept happening on repeat because I didn't stand up for myself and they took me for granted and took my kind gestures for granted, I gave them love and help them in areas their own family abandoned them whether it was money or helped with hosue projects

But in the process I abandoned myself and didn't respect myself until one day I did. And I told them I no longer wanted to go into 2026 with with my chest feeling like glass. I want to reset rebuild and transform and focus on healing in 2026

  • The good news is it sounds like you have rightfully severed connections with acquaintances, not with actual friends.

Everyone has there own definition of what a friend is. Mine is more rigid than most: essentially, an unrelated family member.

Nevertheless, congratulations, and it sounds like you're on your way to a much better 2026.

  • Still hurts chest feels like glass, after someone mentally slammed your fingers in the door multiple times 🥺

  • I’m right there with you… it was with a very close family member. For years I’ve tried to find ways to make it work for the sake of family ties but I just cant. Crossing my own boundaries for the sake of peace is torture. Other family members will do psychological math equations just to figure out what to say to minimize the verbal and emotional stress but I just cant. Conflict resolution skills are a must for me out of respect for my own sanity. It hurts to walk away but I’ll respectfully go through the grieving process.

  • Over the years I'm not sure whether people changed or I've become more aware of the snakes. My eyes have opened up to how people I've held dear have envied me and behind the scenes manipulative in my relationships.

In the past, I've cut ties with people whose values no longer aligned with mine, even though it may have been difficult to do.

I've found the older I get, the easier it is to sever relationships that are no longer a positive in my life. Thankfully, at times, these negative people disappeared from my life on their own.

I just sever toxic people in my life along the dotted line I draw on them.

Agreed, @MTex! We need to take care of ourselves.

  • Yep I did.. it hurt like heck it was my best friend of 20 years! he kept picking on me sadly about cuddling.. and I just had enough. He doesn’t like touch due to trauma and I respect that.. but he also doesn’t understand the need for touch, which happens to be one of my basic needs. It broke my heart because he was my solid, but I couldn’t take the judgements anymore. I am finally happily living my life, it took 40 years to unapologetically do that.. so I felt like he should be happy for me even if he doesn’t agree with my decision or choices, they are making me happy, they have helped me get mentally healthy, and it’s not like I’m out doing something harmful to myself.

  • @TheFunCartel A la Dexter Morgan style 😜

@MasonDixonCuddl I see it as a form of self care 😌

I learnt over time that if someone doesn’t value you. It’s best to cut them out and focus on the ones that don’t flake and appreciate your time and company.

  • The older I get, I have found that the clearer and more consistently one articulates their values, some people who have a problem with that just end up seeing themselves out. And really, would you want to be friends with people who are that opposed to the things you value/believe so strongly in at all? It's a win-win!

In my history, I've been the last one on a burning asteroid still open to keep a connection going.

I learned that letting go of someone is the best love you can give them. And yourself.

I had to block a friend of mine because he would have repeated meltdowns and would one week say I am a true keeper of a friend, and then the next week saying he is outgrowing me. All on the basis of what beautiful woman he would get a date with.

He was either a clinger, or above all.

I never realize how freeing it feels to finally let someone go. I still feel soothed by it.
