Where/How do I find and respond to cuddle requests?

Requests will show up in Messages
That being the case, I don't quite understand the purpose of these cuddle request threads. Why would they not just look for cuddlers in their area and message them?
It shows interest and makes people feel like they have a better chance? Dunno
