The Kindness of Strangers

I had knee replacement surgery 6 weeks ago and only now am able to leave my condo to go to appointments. I live on the 2nd floor in a no-elevator building, so getting up the building's staircase can be challenging.

Today I had gone out to get some lab work done. I was very slowly and carefully getting up the stairs. All of a sudden, a man's voice said, "I'm right behind you, making sure you don't fall." He stood on the step behind me, arms outstretched and holding on to both banisters in concern for my safety.

This man was a total stranger. He was part of the landscaping crew that was doing work across the street. He saw me hobbling up the stairs slowly with my cane and stopped what he was doing to cross the street and come help me. It was so nice and really made my day.

There's so much pessimism in the world lately that I though a random act of kindness should be celebrated. Any stranger do anything nice for you lately?

    I think he can recognize kind souls like you. Thank you for sharing. Knee replacement recovery is painful. I watched our Senior VP recover from it. He played football at Ohio State and he is 6’6” tall and big, but he might as well have been a frail invalid when he was recovering from his second replacement at the age of 64.

    I’m so glad to read your post! I hope you’re doing well with your recovery also, definitely give yourself time. Living in a building with no elevator is a huge challenge.
    I had both of mine done 3 years ago and 3 months apart and it’s the best decision I’ve made. My advice is to take the pain meds so that you’re able to do the PT very soon. I did for both and easily sit cross legged on the floor, very flexible. My Dr also had me climbing stairs same day as surgery and that also made a difference. If you’re climbing stairs already, I think you will have a great recovery.
