Recently had a chat with a fellow shop owner about art, artists and good places to see/experience visual art, and thought I’d put my curious inquiry out there.

Do you enjoy visual art? If so, what mediums, artists and where do you go to see/experience it?

For me … the number one place for art is the mountains and forest. The natural environment can be amazing.

Outside of that I love the Art Institute in Chicago and all of the galleries/museums in Washington DC. College and University galleries, museums and shows are often interesting, for I feel student art is fresh, raw and sometimes good.

Please share your places, experiences.

    If I'm at a museum, I really like the classical works, especially statuary. There's a timeless elegance to it that's hard to beat. I used to be a regular at the NC museum of art in Raleigh when I lived there.

    But I agree, nature is the best canvas... the lighting and color shifts at sunset especially make for a dynamic display. I love hiking around the mountain trails here in Colorado Springs, you find new perspectives around each turn, viewpoint shifting subtly until you feel like you entered some place outside of time. I think what makes it extra special is the quiet and calm, especially in the winter.

    Love nature but also a combination of architecture along natural formations.

    I also love layers of rock like Calico Mountains.

    And anything out in the universe.

    I'm a fan of the New Britain Art Museum in CT and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in MA. The Stewart museum has a gorgeous indoor conservatory garden- which really mixes the beauty of natural environment and historical art. The pictures honestly don't do the atmosphere justice!

    They do justice enough for me to want to go there. I love a good atmosphere that allows me to skip out of reality a bit.
