Anyone done House sitting before? I wanna try

I'm new to the world of house sitting, do you think they will require a remote job Soni can stay home 24/7 or could I have a 9 to 5 feed the dogs plants collect mail take out trash before and after work? I also work Uber so if I did a long shift I could actually take a break and come back in the middle and resume later for flexibility

Just wondering if anyone has real world experience or know someone who has

    Depends who you are housesitting for. If it’s an accountant then you can probably leave and come back. If it’s a drug dealer then you need to stay and have access to automatic fire arms. If it’s a teacher then you can leave because they know firsthand about supplementing an income. If it’s a landlord then you will probably pay them to house sit their property. You get the idea.

    I’ve been house sitting regularly since 2021 but my main job is remote so it allows me to work from the owners homes. Every now and then I need to go into the office or I have a seminar and if need be I’ll go around lunch time to let the dogs out or take them for a walk.

    I have been House sitting and Petsitting off and on for years. My first job was in the late 1970s for a woman who travelled for Amex most of the year. I really enjoyed it, especially caring for her Yorkie. He became my dog too.
    I was house sitting recently, for most of January. I have repeat clients & families. My contacts are through word of mouth but there are websites/apps for it. An important part of it is honestly/reliability, attention to detail and dependability of course. Great references also but you have to start somewhere.

    The two people I know of who do house sitting do not work outside of the home, they each stay there with the pets working, and only leave to run errands, get food, etc. In this scenario, they are not paid a dime, they just get a free place to live and the opportunity to be in a different city.

    I sometimes housesat for my boss when I was younger. I would stay the weekend, and physically go to work during the week. The amount of gas alone going back to let the poor dog out at lunch and running back and forth ate through what he paid me. Absolutely not worth it, in that scenario. After the second time, I declined any future requests.

    It’s my “side gig”. I pet sit too!! Most people will allow you to come and go as you need to and only expect you to be there for the times THEY usually would be. Just don’t throw any raves, ya know?? Bring your own toothbrush and stuff, definitely rinse out the shower and rinse any dishes and put them in the dishwasher and you should be “good”!

    That’s always been my experience from doing it for more than a 100 families. But I was never working a full time job (freelance illustration career). Pet/housesitting is lucrative enough. I also traveled to Austin a few times for a family there.
    Clients give me a fairly strict schedule to follow. But it allows for free time. Most have a housekeeper come in but I clean up also.
    I also absolutely never bring anyone into the house. I live in their home as if there was a camera on, follow their rules carefully though I don’t know that they have one.

    What apps / websites do y'all use to find house sitting gigs? I am on housesitter com and it seems all the gigs I come across or requests I receive are scams.

    What @Dreamfish said. I have used TrustedHousesitters when I travel (which is all the time) and my son is unavailable. They thoroughly vet and I have never been disappointed. Besides if they vet you and you pass I will trust you here.

    Hi! I use trustedhousesitters.com but I use it on the flip side… cuz I need someone to take care of my pets and so far it has been pretty great! There are people who want to travel the world for free and there are others who just want or need to live frugally for whatever their reasons.     So my plan definitely is to do Uber and work universal studios part time have a place to stay in between this should work out perfectly.

    I think one of the. Wants 120 upfront for the year ouch!!

    Another one cheaper but idk if it's as accredited as the main site

    @MeltMyWay I’m a sitter on Rover and I know there’s a lot of amazing sitters on there. Just make sure you read the reviews and do a meet and greet firsthand to see if the sitter is going to be a good fit for your pets.

    I was a professional nanny and a house manager for 25 years so I have tons of experience.

    @Carrie_Anne They don’t have to tell you if they have cameras or not but if they do, they should know any camera footage is inadmissible in court if you DIDN’T know, so I always ask people up front in case anything happens and video recordings are necessary. People think “It’s MY house” and N-O that’s NOT legally how that works (at least, not in M-Y state)!

    Well it doesn’t matter either way. I treat their home and pets with extreme care, their house is as they left it when they return, including fresh flowers.
    I would never give my clients any reason to not trust me - it’s not hard. Choose honesty!

    @great_pillow08 and @Carrie_Anne I’ve contracted with Rover, and THS. Both have in their TOS about cameras - you cannot have a camera in private areas such as a bathroom or bedroom - and they do have to advise on other cameras in the home.
