Greenville, SC - What would you do there?!

I’m visiting this part of the country for the first time - and was curious if anyone had any recommendations? I don’t drink, I may have a car - if I really need it. I see there is a zoo, and some parks? Haha.

Should I just get a car and drive to Asheville during the day for fun? I love history, arts, weird museums, and non direct sun places to hang. Thank you!

    Downtown Greenville is pretty cool and you definitely need to check out Falls Park on the Reedy. Asheville is fairly close and if you prefer the mountains that’s the place to go. But I prefer the ocean and if you invest in a three hour drive, Charleston and the surrounding island beaches are a must see. And for the history aspect, the site you must see is the historical birthplace of FunCartel in Sumter, SC. In the middle of the state not too far from Sumter and Columbia is the Congaree National Park, which is a picturesque wetlands and swamp area.

    While I was born in and spent my formative years in Sumter, it is not exactly a destination town. Up until a few years ago, downtown Sumter was not paved and had cobblestone streets which sucked to drive on but added character to the old town. But it does have Swan Lake which features all the swan species known to man plus loads of beautiful Japanese Iris.

    I was assaulted by the f$&kin swans when I was 5. My mom never spoke of it much when I pressed her for details. So I suppose I have unexplored ornithology trauma I need to unpack.

    You may want to visit nearby Fort Sumter and see the plaque honoring The Fun Cartel for firing the first shot of the Civil War. He claimed he was shooting at a goose

    Actually Fort Sumter is over 100 miles away but in Great-great grandpappy’s defense the goose hunting is awesome there.

    @7gem And funny you should mention that. My mom and dad told me that out of towners would go into the five-and-dime downtown and want to know where the fort was. The manager of the drugstore would tell them they moved it to Charleston.

    Of course this was before GPS and the internet.

    If you enjoy weird, I definitely recommend Asheville. It's not a far drive at all. It has a similar vibe to Austin, or Portland. If you're that far, I would highly recommend dipping further west to explore the Smokies. They are glorious. 🌿🌲

    Well if you don't mind driving,about 3hrs away from Greenville is a place called South of The Border..It's a Mexican themed roadside attraction with lodgings,giftshops,restaurants,amusement park,And a reptile Lagoon.. Been around for 70 years and the first time I saw it was the summer of '87 when I went there..
