Too much pollen! - Seasonal Allergies

How bad is the pollen in your area?

Here in Central Florida, it is AWFUL. I live in an area with a lot of oak trees and while it’s really pretty, around this time of the year the pollen is so overwhelming that allergy medicine and nasal sprays only provide a little relief but are for the most part ineffective. I get not everyone has hay fever but for those who do - stay strong through these next couple of months!

Let’s not forget having to wash the car every week.

  • Same story here my friend. Dust and dryness exacerbate allergies… assuming that’s not your problem in Florida!

I have a whole house humidifier and hepa filtration. Always shower before bed. And have three part system of allergy meds when or if needed. Amazingly going well so far despite huge pollen loads.

Take care and all sufferers have my sympathies too.

  • This year is particularly bad.

Central ca now, was bad up in utah, nv as well. Az wasn't too bad.

  • It’s on the news everywhere. Tree pollen is off the charts across the entire country. The crazy weather patterns this past winter is attributed to the surge. There are not many options in the country to escape the tree pollen, so breathe deep and embrace the suffering.

  • I have been suffering with itchy eyes for over 2 weeks now. Quality of life certainly impacted. Suggestions for OTC eye drops?

  • @consciousseeker recommended by my ophthalmologist. Seems to work for me.

  • @lovingspoonfull be careful because sometimes they have antibiotics in them. I had a doctor prescribe me some with antibiotics and I’m allergic to sulfa and even though it says that on my chart, I wound up getting those antibiotics and in another case in an over-the-counter version same thing. I no longer trust eye drops. My eyes were watering for like a month.

  • Terrible in Austin.

When I go outside this time of year, I put these foam filters in my nose to reduce the amount of pollen, dirt and dust I'm breathing in. If it's really bad, I'll wear a n95 mask too. I can get migraines so bad this time of year that I get all of the flu symptoms too.

I also took a genetic test that shows I have some issues with genes that help downregulate histamine into less problematic substances. So I take a supplement that substitutes for the faulty genes. I think it helps, but its not a cure. Without the supplement, when I'm having an allergy attack it felt like tiny shards of glass in my blood, which funny enough, is what they described this issue as.

On the supplement, I just have the allergy issues, not the runaway migraine problems. The filters cut down on my exposure to pollen and I take Claritin a couple of times a month. That's all I have to take to be mostly ok. I still feel tired this time of year, but I'll take it.

Here in the NorCal valley it's already been a rough season due to the extremely early heat wave combined with adequate precipitation over the winter.

I already take both Rx and OTC antihistamines, nasal sprays, and eye drops daily, but I've been having to double dip with benedryl just to keep my allergy-triggered asthma under control. Showering when I get home, saline nasal rinses, HEPA air purifier, and wearing an n95 mask when outside has also been helping some. Mostly though I'm just trying to limit my exposure as much as possible 🤦🏻‍♀️

Even those without allergies are struggling this year just due to the sheer amount of particulate in the air. It's almost as bad as fire season.

Took this picture a couple weeks ago before the heat wave - it's gotten even worse

Edit for clarification: definitely don't double/triple dip on antihistamines like I do unless you are working with an allergist. At best, doing it wrong can just waste money and be ineffective. At worst, you can get interactions and bad side effects.

  • Same here I think I overdid a little bit, but it’s better to be safe than sorry🤷🏻‍♀️

On the lighter note for us Floridians, have you guys seen the skit from OMGitswicks #bestcomedianever lol I’m an engineer and sometimes have to be on job sites (ie concrete dust and old buildings for renovation). Megadosing on Vitamin C seems to help me.

@bianca106 wearing two different socks! =)
@disneysamurai go to weather app or website and on the map select air quality data … you will find AQI for many areas

  • @HUGGGGG 🤣😂🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @stormydaycuddle 👍agree; I thinks it’s smart to always be careful, have been mis-prescribed by doctors too.

  • @HUGGGGGG i think the air quality measure only accounts for things like pollution because right now it’s 47 where I’m at. Pollen is usually measured separately and right now it’s marked as very high for the next couple of days.

  • I’m from LA so pollen has never really crossed my mind like that. But I’m in Atlanta right now and my rental car literally had a pollen warning in it… then I saw this post right after 😂
Just adding my two cents… seems like it’s way more real out here.

  • @disneysamurai got you… I thought it was part of it …

@shecuddless yeah, I lived in the Carolinas for a number of years and while the pollen season out there is significantly shorter than here in the NorCal valley, it was way more intense. We're talking several inches deep drifts of pollen like snow.

The big issue back in CA is that it's essentially allergy season all year round for some. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'll just be recovering from the spring tree & grass pollens and then ragweed season will hit. Followed by mold & mildew.

The irony of a broken from birth immune system - it's constantly both over reactive and under reactive 😅😭🙃

  • Can pollen season be over already? No, shouldn’t ask that because right after pollen season is a hot summer and they’re expecting a severe drought in Florida this year.

    Coincidence? I think not!

  • Is that why I m Sneezy suddenly

  • This post was a great reminder for me: stop procrastinating getting my allergy testing updated. I've been meaning to for years now but, nope, I just keep brushing it off... This Spring, Daren's gonna lock TF in and get 'er done.
