Hair Donation

Hello. Tomorrow I am planning to get my hair cut and ready to donate to Wigs For Kids. I believe I measured around 18 inches. I plan to go to Supercuts since after they tie and cut it I will just have them buzz the rest at 0 and start growing it over. I donated twice before to locks of love but I usually went with my mom to her salon. I didn't want to overpay for a haircut which is why I decided on my local supercuts. I have never donated to Wigs for Kids though so I'm just curious if there's anything I should be aware of or any tips to tell the hairstylist. I plan to have them wash and dry it before cutting.

  • I donated to Locks of Love and they specifically did not want it washed. They didn't want the oils to be stripped. The hairstylist should know what to do. Usually they're part of the process, and will send it off etc for you.

  • I'm wholly unfamiliar with this myself, but damn, good for you❤️
I know it means so much to those kids.

  • I've donated to both Locks of Love and Wigs for Kids multiple times over the years since I was a teen. Both have guidelines and requirements up on their websites if questions come up, but in general they're pretty forgiving. When I first started donating, hair couldn't be color treated but now it's ok with LoL.

And for folks who don't have long enough or qualifying hair: they always need monetary donations as well to offset costs.

  • So I have some leave-in conditioner in my hair today, and I figured I'll just have them wash it tomorrow and then dry it, tie it, and cut it.

Thank you for the responses. I'll definitely try to get some pictures and I guess I'll finally have a new profile picture or two.
I'm just wondering if one big braid/ponytail is better or multiple. I'm just worried that multiple will have different lengths that might not be long enough.

  • @CSnMUS87 they usually recommend multiple ponytails for layered hair. The stylist should know what will work best with your particular hair. And don't worry about any shorter strands - any that don't meet requirements get resold to help with operation costs, so it still helps

  • I’ve donated twice also. I didn’t wash my hair before but i did rinse it only because i use a lot of gels and stuff.

  • I’ve been bald for 30 years so no donating from me but lots of love and respect for all of you that have donated. This means a lot to me as a cancer survivor. Thanks to all of you.

  • Here are the specific guidelines for the organization you're using:

I donated to them about five years ago. Wish I had done it about twelve years ago...my hair was to my booty!

  • @SunsetSnuggles whoa now THAT is long. I wanted hair that long for cosplay but I couldn't dream of maintaining that and brushing it.

    Here's the photos from today.

  • It’s like you’ve been birthed from The Matrix.

  • I guess I found out the limit of pictures per post lol. Here's the rest. Got 6 braids that are all long

  • Trying to figure out which one(s) to use for my profile.

  • I guess when it comes to cancer, length matters.

  • Use the first bald one you posted. It looks like you know something mysterious.

  • @CSnMUS87
Congratulations! That's a lot of hair.

And understandable about the maintenance...yours is much curlier than mine!

I agree with @IronicMaiden's photo choice.

  • I love this!!!! Good for you

  • That’s so kind ❤️Your braids will make a child very happy. Acts of selflessness makes the world a better place.

  • @CSnMUS87 you killed it bro 👏 great job 💯

  • amazing and the shaved is a fantastic look! I agree with ironicmaidens pick.

  • Awesome! 🙌🙌

  • Amazing man! Great work! And you rock the shaved head, too!

As someone who has never been able to grow my hair long, think 70's-era Brady Bunch hair, there is a small part of me that's jealous.

And the others are right. That first pic is the one.

  • @CSnMUS87 you look amazing! I know how much of a literal weight off your head & neck that must be. At least with the shaved head you won't be smacking yourself with the hairbrush when you run out of length like I did 😅 That's a lot of nice hair that is going to help some kids feel more like themselves during a hard time 💖

And I agree with the other ladies: that first pic you shared revealing the shave is the best!

  • I just buzzed my hair yesterday

  • @CSnMUS87 ive been shaving my head for years, welcome to the club. You look amazing.

  • Yes, another bald knower! You look great without hair. So cool of you to donate.
