Stomach flu or food poisoning

I came home from work on Tueadsy and felt really tired. I took a long nap and woke up feeling better. I went to work the next day on Wednesday and felt great all morning/afternoon. Around 3pm, I took a downward turn and felt horrible. I came home and slept 12 hours, woke up feeling a bit better, called out sick, then slept another 5 hours. I woke up feeling decent, belly was in knots but overall I felt okay. I stayed awake for awhile and did some stuff. I took a nap later in the day today around 4pm and noticed when I laid down that I had chills which was new. Up to this point, I had been feeling extremely exhausted, body aches and have the big D. I think it’s odd that how I feel fluctuates, I feel decent, then bad. I haven’t gone to the doctor and I’m probably not unless it gets worst or doesn’t go away but I’m self diagnosing this as either having the stomach flu or food poisoning.

What’s your experience with either, how long did it take to go away, did how you felt fluctuate and what did you do to help yourself feel better?

  • A couple of thoughts:

    • stomach bugs and other viruses are FAR more common than food poisoning.
    • food poisoning usually comes on quickly within hours, viruses usually have an incubation period and ramp up more slowly
    • the typical stomach bugs (norovirus and rotavirus) are not the only viral causes of those symptoms. For example, the more recent variations of COVID-19 have developed stomach symptoms as well, and it can be hard to distinguish without testing. The last time I had COVID, my primary symptoms were fever, body aches, and digestive system symptoms - and that is with me being extremely prone to respiratory illnesses and complications.
    • general recommendations are to go to the doctor if you have severe stomach symptoms for more than 2 days or show signs of dehydration. It's better to err on the side of caution than to wait too long
  • So sorry you went through this.
My dad was a pharmacist, for either situation, charcoal capsules absorb the toxins if it is food poisoning or if it might be a virus.
When my daughter was 10 years old, she had a very bad virus. Very nauseated. There was an essential oil that was called Di-Gize. I rubbed that on the outside of her stomach and within 10 minutes she was resting and sleeping.

  • Food poisoning comes on very strong and you just want to die to make it stop.

  • Feel better soon 🫂

Not an expert but stomach flu or food poisoning doesn't usually give chills or body aches. It might give fever. Definitely get tested for Covid. Self diagnosing might be good for 1 or 2 symptoms but you have more. This needs a diagnosis by a doctor. And if it is food poisoning, it's really important to get it treated within first 72 hours. Untreated/misdiagnosed food poisoning for a long time can cause post infectious IBS which is a lifelong disorder that doesn't have a cure as of now. So, please consult a doctor as soon as possible. The very least, I'd get at home covid test kit delivered by doordash.

    @pikapika412

My mind did go there, is this Covid, Hanta virus, Ebola 🤦🏻‍♂️ but I have had Covid before and this feels nothing like it. A test may be a good idea, I’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

Btw I just looked up Covid tests on DoorDash and in addition to the Covid tests, it showed me pics of men’s drawers? Why did it do that? Um excuse me sir, since you’re at home sick, perhaps you’d like to look and feel sexy in some new drawers 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast) and hydrate.

    Godspeed!

  • Stay hydrated no matter what and rest even if you dont want it. Recently I was sick on and off for a month and a half when my son went into daycare and lost 12 lbs pi king up everything he brought home. severe cold, stomach bug then bronchitis...

  • Update: I woke up feeling much better but I’m definitely not back 100% yet.

  • my vote is a stomach bug

Stay hydrated. Do you need colonoscopy ? Feel better soon. I was having different symptoms but they improved after I had it last year.

  • @trysdet

    Do you need colonoscopy

Seeing as I had colon cancer, that comment makes me feel some kinda way lol ironically, I do have one scheduled for June. Seeing as I had colon cancer, I have to get them regularly.

  • Oof no fun. I'm sorry. I hope the colonoscopy is clear!

  • Hope you’re on the mend now. Take care of yourself!

@Morpheus prayers up for your continued healing. From that illness . I'm supposed to go again for that routine in 2028. I hope you feel better soon.

  • Hopefully you're starting to feel better, @Morpheus .

  • Thank you all. I felt much better all day but then just had a wave where I felt horrible. Apparently that’s normal. Hopefully I’ll be better tomorrow.

  • Sounds like it could be Covid. In my experience, food poisoning is non-stop vomiting. 😉

  • Well things just got interesting…. my Wife woke up this morning not feeling well with the same symptoms that I had. This rules out food poisoning, I’m ruling out Covid because I had no other symptoms, sounds like it’s the stomach flu.

  • I thought that I had a stomach virus but it just wouldnt go away. I finally went to the doctor and it turned out I had pneumonia. Go to the doctor. Im so glad I did. Be healthy.

  • Just my opinion as someone who gets sick frequently - I wouldn't rule out COVID without a test, and still highly recommend going to the doctor for confirmation 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Ya’ll ready for some tmi? Well I’ll just say this, no more big D 💩😂❤️
