The Group Stage of the World Cup is usually the most fun part. All the teams are jockeying for position for the knockout stage and even legends are created in the beginnings of the event.
A story that should never be forgotten, Cape Verde (Cabo Verde). Initially thought of as just another starter nation to be disposed of in the Group Stage showed the most grit and heart of any debut competitor and that very legend began when they held their ground against one of the finalists (Spain) in their very first World Cup match, ending the game in a draw. Granted a draw is a draw in any aspect of the game but that was a moral W for Cabo Verde because Spain was heavily favored to win that game but didn't definitively beat Cabo Verde. They won me over and through the rest of their games, they all ended in draws but it was enough for them to advance to the Round of 32 just by virtue of holding off 2 former WC champions in Spain and Uruguay. Their Cinderella story eventually struck midnight when they were met with the misfortune of being matched up against the other finalist in this WC, Argentina. They never gave up though, even knowing that they would eventually lose, they made Argentina work for that win in extra time in one of the most thrilling games played in that tourney. Those boys were the stuff of legend and made a great splash in their first ever WC in history. Fun fact, their goalkeeper Vozinha now has the most followers in social media out of every other GK in this year's WC just based on the strength of keeping Spain goalless.
@SelfMadeJay beautifully said. I really cried watching them go because they were formidable in every sense of that word. They put Argentina to work 😅 and I hope they get more opportunities from this exposure, especially Vozinha. Love that man.

@SelfMadeJay Vozinha has definitely become one of the biggest stories of the World Cup. He was a huge reason for Cabo Verde’s success. Don’t forget how he single-handedly held Spain scoreless in their opening match and his massive saves against Messi in their knock out game against Argentina. Both opponents are now in the finals.
@Gracious Nothing like a good underdog story to keep me compelled in a mighty tourney such as the World Cup. I was kinda hoping they'd go at least almost as deep as Morocco did in 2022 but they were dealt the death hand having to face the defending WC champions in the Round of 32. I can see Cabo Verde getting stronger from here and that very gritty squad put them on the map.
That aside, my team is Brazil and this was another let down of an appearance as far as my guys go. It also stings even more that Argentina may very well go back 2 back, the very mention of it leaves a gross taste in the mouth. 😂 As sad as it is to see Neymar Jr. go, the future seems relatively bright with Vinicius Jr. and Casemiro picking up the slack. The rest of the roster is in dire need of retooling.
edit: @ProfHermes that's true, Spain defeated many but they couldn't put down Cabo Verde and it took Argentina going to overtime to beat them as well as a late extra time goal to save them from penalty kicks. Vozinha was the iron man in the tourney though I'm uncertain of any future appearances from him since he's the same age as I am, 40. Ronaldo's pretty much gonna pack it up, that Croatian team captain is also in the twilight of his career, the homie Neymar Jr. is hanging it up and Messi will stop at nothing to ride off into the sunset with another WC in tow. This may very well be the end of an era.
@SelfMadeJay yes, all of Vozinha, CR7, Modric, and perhaps Messi will retire from the World stage. I can see Vozinha getting a club contract somewhere. He’s always welcome to come play in the MLS 😂.

@SelfMadeJay I don't want to gloat yet but I think Argentina might take it home. It will be one for the history books and Messi will be the undisputed GOAT. He has had such an incredible run, I genuinely wish him one more WC trophy to seal his legacy.

@Gracious I'm half Brazilian by heritage (my mom's grandparents came to NYC by way of São Paulo) so it's basically a rivalry thing between Brazil and Argentina and it runs deep whether it be by sports or culture in general. (It's like Ohio State vs. Michigan in college football).
So if you're thinking this is a CR7 vs. Messi thing, nah it ain't like that. I'm not a fanboy or a hater of Ronaldo and I got nothing against Lionel Messi. He's actually a cool dude and deserves his accolades, I just dislike the country he represents. Hell I actually expect Argentina to win, but if they do happen to blow it against Spain, I can't deny a smile will be on my face all night. 😁
