I was up in Vermont yesterday and the sky was orange, it was like dusk dark at noon, and the wind, powered by the fire was intense. My clothes smelled like smoke.
Here in western Mass. Sky was yellow yesterday. Definitely causing breathing problems.

Everyone do stay safe and not spend too much time outdoors. I remember this same thing happening back in 2023 when the wildfire smoke spread down to NYC and that one was BAD! The whole sky was orange and smelled like burnt toast for 3 days straight. Thankfully it's not as bad this time around but it definitely can be an issue with others having compromised issues with breathing.
My air purifier is on full blast and just barely keeping up. If you have been experiencing these semiannually forest fire smoke drifts, it’s a worthy investment.
Not all homes are sealed well enough but hopefully a purifier would help clear the air 😬

@theHugAlchemist i might not be the best example. I picked up mine in 2019 for hobbies that you don’t want to breath and decided after some research that paying a bit too much for a premium and possibly gimmicky device was worth it.
It’s a Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool. Detects particles, detects VOC’s, has carbon filter and regular filter. Bonus operates as a space heater and of course a fan. My cats can’t be tempted to touch the fan blades because the impeller is in the base. Remote control and a decent phone app. It was expensive in the “before times” and it’s not gotten any easier to buy. But it’s been running for more than half a decade so I think I’ve got my money’s worth in the end.

I have one running in my office at work and one in my bedroom at home. Supposedly it filters out 99.9% particles and other things. I originally got it in hopes of minimizing covid or other germs in the air but now it seems to be working for the air quality I think. Might be a less expensive option compared to the Dyson (which I'm sure is amazing)
I really feel for the wild life, the animals. Humans can drive away. Animals can only run so far before they get left behind and tge fire catchsup. The agony in the eyes. The panic. The hurt. It’s so painful to even think of it. My heart hurts for those poor helpless souls. I think the natives who understand the land should be allowed to do control burning so that incidents to this capacity does not happen. So that animals n humans don’t suffer. I think Premier Doug Ford who has refused control burning should put more funding into fire fighters planes. Hopefully he gets a wake-up call from this tragedy. Sad. The climate change specially in North America with extreme warm summers will only bring more tragedies like this one if we are not prepared for them. My heartfelt sympathies to all the helpless wildlife. Saw the news. Couple of moose running in a panic trying to outrun the fire. The panic in those eyes and body language was very hurtful to see. We humans can help them not to Make them suffer in the same way again.
I'm so sorry to hear y'all are getting hit this year - you'd think California has enough for the whole country 😬 this year is supposed to be particularly bad, so I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop.
If you can't afford a decent HEPA air purifier - a box fan with an AC filter zip tied or duct taped to it works surprisingly well. Also, wet towels placed along window sills and door frames - wherever there are air leaks. And all those n95/kn95 masks we have from the pandemic? I was using those during fires before it was cool. During the infamous Paradise fire I was just outside the evacuation zone and was sleeping in my Cambridge masks - but I don't recommend doing that unless you absolutely must (I have asthma and lung damage from infections).
And as @IronicMaiden mentioned, if you have asthma or a history of lung issues, it's important to pre-treat and treat early - don't wait til symptoms escalate.
Speaking of Cambridge mask - I *highly" recommend them. Most adjustable and comfortable reusable n95s that I have tried. They have a sale right now too! (No, I am not sponsored or get affiliate kickbacks or anything. I'm just a gal with crappy lungs & immune system who is very familiar with long-term masking for multiple reasons)
I’ve got three air filters running through my house at all times. At first I questioned whether or not they were doing anything. And then I changed the filters on them for the first time. 😬
I’m glad to have them. In New Hampshire the sky was dark orange and like dusk in the middle of the day. And the winds were wild for several days even after the sky cleared.
The air quality is fair right now, so I have my windows open. But I'll close them before I go to bed because it's supposed to be poor tomorrow.
My heart goes out to everyone experiencing this. Not only animals but homeless people and outside workers are breathing that same air too. ☹️

Except Canada forests are 8 times the size of all the US forests combined and 6 million acres have burned this year in Canada versus 3 million acres in the entire US last year. This is an annual event in Canada that has worsened in recent years just like the US and dwarfs the US wildfires. Hence the multiple US states affected by the Canadian wildfires.
Yet there are a few hardheaded people who don’t believe climate change is real. Until it affects them of course.
The air quality was the worst I’ve ever seen it here in Delaware today. Hope everyone is safe and taking precautions!
