Lately I’ve been studying the labor participation rate percentage as an indicator of recession activity 🤔
If my neighbor is unemployed, we're in a recession.
If I'm unemployed, we're in a depression.
The pop music gets a lot better quality.
Clear back in the 90s, a friend of mine owned a frozen yogurt business in Northern Indiana. He said the leading indicator of entering or exiting a recession was the percentage of customers paying for their purchases with $20 bills (back when most people carried cash for small purchases).
He said when entering a recession he started seeing a lot more customers paying with 10s, and 5s.

The amount of sessions that get booked then the client doesn’t respond with where the session takes place. The lack of bookings… The amount of professionals in an area increasing while paying enthusiasts decreasing. Talking to clients who have lost their jobs. 😥

I think regular people matter the most, so for me it's how much money is being spent on common non-essentials. Things like ice cream shops, nail salons, more expensive pet foods, eating out, etc.
My recession indicator is when I walk into Target for toothpaste and somehow leave with only toothpaste.🥴

I love Del Taco. I have noticed the addition of high-end vehicles in the parking lot and drive-through, indicating that people are looking to save money on dining out.
Honestly I prefer to just make food at home. That way it's customized to my liking and I know who the food suppliers are etc.
